Early-stage startup companies face the challenge of surviving with limitedresources and capabilities, making it crucial to overcome this hurdle. However, it is difficult for these startups to simultaneously focus on twodistinct areas, namely R&D and market penetration, due to their limitedresources and capabilities. To successfully survive and ultimately grow,early-stage startups need to efficiently utilize their limited resources andcapabilities, while effectively addressing their weaknesses. This study aimsto derive effective strategies for the survival and growth of early-stagestartups by analyzing the case of HEM Pharma, a biotech startup in SouthKorea. HEM Pharma was founded in 2017 as a spin-off from a researchlaboratory at Handong University, with a primary focus on microbialresearch and development. Through technology agreements with severallarge corporations, including equity investments, HEM Pharma achievedsignificant R&D accomplishments in a short period, which served as afoundation for its growth. By analyzing such cases, this study providesinsights into how early-stage startups can efficiently utilize their limitedresources and capabilities through focus and concentration, collaborate withlarger corporations to complement their weaknesses, and achieve symbioticgrowth for their survival and expansion.

초기 창업기업은 한정된 소규모 자원과 역량만을 보유하고 있으며, 이를 극복해 생존하는 것이 최선의 과제이다. 하지만 한정된 자원과 역량을 생존을 위해 R&D와 시장침투를 위한 노력 등 유형이 다른 두 부분에 동시에 집중하기에 어려운 상황이다. 초기창업기업은 생존에 성공, 나아가 성장하기 위해 보유한 한정된 자원과 역량을 최대한효율적으로 활용해야 하며, 약점은 효과적으로 보완해야 한다. 본 연구는 국내 바이오벤처기업인 HEM Pharma의 사례를 분석함으로써 초기 창업기업의 생존과 성장을 위한효과적인 전략을 도출한다. HEM Pharma는 2017년 한동대학교 연구실에서 창업한 기업으로, 미생물 분야 R&D를 주 사업 영역으로 확보하고 있다. 현재 여러 대기업과 지분투자를 조건으로 하는 기술협약을 통해 단기간에 높은 R&D 성과을 달성했으며, 이를기반으로 성장하고 있다. 이러한 사례의 분석을 통해 본 연구는 초기 창업기업이 보유하고 있는 한정된 자원과 역량을 선택과 집중을 통해 효율적으로 활용하고, 약점으로써작용되는 부분을 대기업과 협업해 상생하며 보완하는 전략을 취하는 것이 기업의 생존과 성장에 도움이 될 수 있다는 시사점을 제공하고자 한다.
