Adam Smith has useful insights to teach and enlighten us not only about ‘economics, markets, transactions and trade’, but also about the profound problems of ‘inequality, culture, and human society’ that we face today. At the center of Adam Smith’s thought is to shed light on the ‘great Enlightenment project’. This project seeks (i) to investigate “a science of man”, covering all major aspects of human life, including philosophy, religion, political economy, law, and art, as well as science and even language, and (ii) to present a ‘unified and general’ explanation. The purpose of this short study is (i) to overcome the differences in perception and myths about Adam Smith raised by the political left and right and (ii) to suggest the caricature of the “real Adam Smith”. To this end, I would like to describe the several myths about Adam Smith and present the real Adam Smith. Adam Smith’s valuable insights will guide a ‘new narrative’ that will serve as a starting point for the future direction of capitalism and for rebuilding its hollowed-out center.

애덤 스미스는 ‘경제학, 시장, 거래와 무역’에 대해서 뿐만 아니라 오늘 날 우리가 직면하고 있는 ‘불평등, 문화, 인간 사회’의 심오한 문제들에 대해서도 우리를 가르치고 일깨워 줄 많은 통찰력을 가지고 있다. 애덤 스미스 사상의 중심에는 ‘위대한 계몽주의 프로젝트’(Enlightenment project)가 자리 잡고 있다. 이 프로젝트는 “인간에 대한 과학”(a science of man)을 규명(糾明)하는 것으로, 철학, 종교, 정치경제학, 법학, 예술뿐 만 아니라 과학, 심지어 언어까지 포괄하는 인간 삶의 모든 주요 측면에 걸쳐서 ‘통일되고 일반적인 설명’을 제시하는 것이었다. 본 소고의 목적 은 정치적 좌·우파에 의해 제기되는 애덤 스미스에 대한 인식의 차이와 미신들을 타파하고 ‘진짜 애덤 스미스’의 모습을 제시하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 애덤 스미스에 대한 미신을 서술하고, 진짜 애덤 스미스의 모습을 제시하고자 한다. 애덤 스미스의 통찰력은 자본주의가 앞으로 나아갈 방향과 공동화(空洞化)된 중심을 재건하는데 출발점이 되는 ‘새 로운 서사’(敍事)를 제시해 줄 것이다.
