Focusing on two Korean names of furbearing animals, namely cwokceypi ‘weasel, polecat’ and salk ‘leopard cat, wildcat’, this paper aims to describe their lexical histories in old written materials and modern dialectal variations, and to further investigate their ultimate etymology. cwokceypi is first attested in the 17th century as cywokcyepi, whose origin can be traced back to a borrowing from Tungusic (Udegheic to be specific) *čokčɪ ‘weasel’ suffixed with a Sino-Korean element –p(h)i (皮) ‘skin, leather, hide, fur.’ This hypothesis is supported both by the northern dialectal forms with –phi and by the historical fact that the 15th-16th centuries was a period of thriving fur trade between the Korean people and their Tungusic-speaking (“Jurchen”) neighbors in the north. Meanwhile, Middle Korean solk (>salk) generally corresponds to Classical Chinese li (狸), but its referent may have been wider than that of Contemporary Korean, ranging from leopard cats to raccoon dogs and perhaps even weasels in earlier times. Deeper etymology of solk is not so clear, although both external and internal hypotheses of origin are examined in this paper.

본고에서는 모피를 생산하는 동물의 명칭인 ‘족제비’와 ‘삵’에 대해 문증되는 시기 내의 어휘사를 개괄하고 어원을 탐색하였다. ‘족제비’는 문헌에서 ‘죡져비’로 처음 나 타나는데, 한반도 북부를 중심으로 널리 분포하는 ‘족제피’ 등의 어형을 참고하면 이 를 퉁구스계 언어에서 차용한 *čokčɪ ‘족제비’에 한자어 皮‘가죽’이 연결된 형태로 파악할 수 있다. 이에 대해 음운론적 설명뿐 아니라 차용이 일어났을 만한 역사적인 정황을 제시하였다. 또한 ‘삵’의 최초 문증 형태 ‘삵’은 대부분의 문헌에서 일관적으 로 狸에 대응되나, 그 지시 대상은 오늘날의 살쾡이보다 넓었을 가능성을 제기하였다. 한편 ‘삵’의 어원은 확정할 수 없지만 한국어 안팎으로 개연적인 비교 대상을 검토하 였고, 이 과정에서 문헌상의 난해어 몇 가지에 대한 해석도 제안하였다.
