A common cultural phenomenon in Asia is the recording and publishing of folktales, carried out in various Asian countries from the late 19th to the late 20th century. This study reviews the research results published to date. We comprehensively examine trends in folktale research in major countries in Southeast and Northeast Asia and discuss future research prospects. Regarding the survey and research on folktales in Southeast Asia, this study examined the research results for foreign and native groups in the following order: Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. That in Northeast Asia examined foreign and native groups in the order of China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. Prospects for research on Asian folktales are as follows. 1) Asian folktales, as a medium of cultural communication, will contribute to increasing cultural diversity in Korean society. 2) There is a need for more active research and discovery of Asian folktales as cultural assets. 3) Korean and foreign literature researchers need to overcome the language barrier of their majors and discover and revitalize topics for Asian literary research through collaboration and joint research. 4) Research on modern personal narratives (MPN) is necessary.

19세기 말엽부터 20세기 후반에 이르기까지 아시아 각국에서 실시된 설화의 채록․출판 작업은 아시아 공통의 문화적 현상이다. 이 연구는 그동안 발표된 연구성과를 바탕으로, 동남아와 동북아 주요 국가들의 설화 조사․연구 동향을 종합적으로 살피고, 앞으로의 연구 전망을 논의하였다. 동남아시아의 설화 조사ㆍ연구는 베트남, 필리핀, 인도네시아 순으로 외국인 그룹과 자국인 그룹의 조사ㆍ연구성과를 고찰하였다. 동북아시아의 설화 조사ㆍ연구는 중국, 대만, 일본, 한국 순으로 외국인 그룹과 자국인 그룹의 조사ㆍ연구성과를 고찰하였다. 아시아 설화 조사ㆍ연구에 대한 기대와 전망은 다음과 같다. 1) 아시아 설화는 문화소통의 매개체로써, 한국 사회의 문화적 다양성을 높이고 아시아 국가들의 문화소통을 활성화하는 데 기여할 것이다. 2) 문화자산으로서 아시아 설화를 좀 더 적극적으로 조사ㆍ발굴할 필요가 있다. 3) 한국문학 및 외국문학 연구자들이 전공 언어의 벽을 허물고, 연구자 간 협업과 공동연구를 통해 아시아 문학 연구의 주제를 발굴하고 활성화할 필요가 있다. 4) 현대구전설화[서사]의 연구가 필요하다.
