In China, the idea of hell was established as scriptures related to hell were tr anslated into Chinese from the Western Qin Dynasty to the Northern and South ern Dynasties. Hell that appeared in the early Buddhist scriptures was expressed very simpl y, but gradually its kind was subdivided. Later, in conjunction with the idea of being judged after death, 『The Sutra of the Ten Kings』 was published during t he late Tang Dynasty and the Oh Dynasty. In this study, various types of hell that appear in Buddhist Books are analyze d and organized. Hells appearing in Buddhist scriptures are described in variou s forms for each scripture, and the names and number of hells are also various. The punishment of hell can be largely divided into burning hell and cold hell. I f you classify hell by the number of hells, it can be divided into 4 major hells, 6 major hells, 8 major hells, 9 major hells, 16 major hells, and 18 major hells. The re is also some a Buddhist scripture mentioned that hell is infinite. Through thi s study, the scriptures in which each hell was mentioned and the contents of h ell were summarized. There are several Buddhist scriptures with illustrations of hell. Through this s tudy, illustrations depicting hell in various Buddhist scriptures were organized and analyzed. The Buddhist scriptures depicting hell did not add to the illustrations of hell over time, but rather added prints to the newly created Buddhist scriptures in C hina to specifically express the appearance of hell. During the Joseon Dynasty, Buddhist scriptures depicting newly created hell introduced from China were popular. In particular, Buddhist scriptures, including hell prints popular in Joseo n, are mostly referred to as fake Buddhist scriptures that are not included in the Tripitaka. I think that the overview of hell included in the Buddhist books will be helpful for the study of the grounds shown in the Buddhist painting.

중국에서는 서진시대에서 남북조시대에 걸쳐 지옥과 관련된 경전이 한역되면서 지옥사상이 성립되었다. 초기 불경에 나타난 지옥은 매우 단순한 현상으로 표현되나, 점차적으로 그 종류가 세분화되었으며, 이후 사후 심판사상과 결합하여당말오대에는 『예수시왕생칠경』이 편찬되기도 하였다. 본고에서는 불교전적에 나타나는 지옥의 다양한 종류를 분석하고 정리하였다. 불교전적에 나타나는 지옥은 경전마다 다양한 형태로 서술되며, 지옥의 명칭 및개수도 다양하다. 지옥의 형벌은 크게 열지옥과 한지옥으로 나눌 수 있다. 지옥의 개수로 지옥을 분류하면, 4대지옥, 6대지옥, 8대지옥, 9대지옥, 16대지옥, 18대지옥 등으로 나눌 수 있으며, 지옥은 무한하다고 언급된 경전도 존재한다. 이러한 지옥의 모습을 각각의 지옥이 언급된 경전과 지옥의 내용을 정리하였다. 지옥의 모습이 판화로 수록된 경전은 고려본 『불설장수멸죄호제동자다라니경』, 고려본 『불설예수시왕생칠경』, 조선본 『불설예술시왕생칠경』, 『불설팔관재계비밀구생정토심요』, 『불설대보부모은중경』, 『불설대목련경』 등이 있다. 각각의 판화와 판화에서 소개한 지옥을 정리하고 분석하였다. 지옥을 언급한 경전이 후대로 가면서 판화가 추가되어 발전하는 것이 아니라, 중국에서 새롭게 만들어진 위경이 판화를 포함하여 지옥의 모습을 구체화하는 것으로 발전하였다. 조선시대에는 중국에서 유입된 위경의 형태로 지옥을 언급한경전들이 유통되었다. 특히 조선에서 유행한 지옥 판화가 포함된 불교경전은 대체로 대장경에는 포함되지 않는 위경으로 언급되는 것이다. 불교 전적에 포함된지옥의 개관을 통해 불화에 나타난 소의경전 연구에 도움이 될 것으로 생각한다.
