Among the new discourses on moral emotions, this study analyzes Nussbaum's main topics of interest, ‘compassion’ and ‘shame’, focusing on his theory of emotions, and based on this, compares the Buddhist concept of ‘mettā-karunā(慈悲)’ and Mencius’s concept of ‘suojisim(羞惡之心)’, respectively. By exploring the differences and points of contact between Nussbaum’s theory of emotions and Eastern moral philosophy, we ultimately use ‘practices’ such as ‘mettā-karunā(慈悲)’ and ‘suojisim(羞惡之心)’ to develop civic capacity in modern society. I aim to build a theoretical foundation to reinterpret and expand the discussion. This study has the character of a preliminary consideration for this purpose.

본 연구는 도덕 감정에 대한 새로운 담론들 중 누스바움의 감정론을 중심으로 그의 주요 관심 주제인 ‘연민’과 ‘수치심’을 분석하고 이를 바 탕으로 불교의 자비 개념과 맹자의 수오지심 개념을 각각 비교하고자 한다. 누스바움의 감정론이 동양 도덕철학과 어떤 차이점과 접점이 있 는지 탐구함을 통해 궁극적으로는 자비(慈悲)와 수오지심(羞惡之心)과 같은 ‘행위 전통(practice)’을 현대 사회의 시민적 역량으로 재해석하고 논의를 확장하기 위한 이론적 토대를 구축하고자 한다. 본 연구는 이 를 위한 예비적 고찰로서의 성격을 가진다.
