The purpose of this study is to examine whether the arguments for elementary school moral education presented in Professor So, Byung Chul's ｢The Vestiges of Authoritarian Education in Current Elementary Moral Textbooks｣ and the cases in the 『Moral』 textbook. To achieve this purpose, ⓐ researchers first examined whether the concept of ‘philosophical character education’ is compelling. As a result, the definition of philosophical character education is obscure, and the rational and critical reason cannot be seen as a complete direction in itself from an educational perspective, and the term does not contain consideration of children's development stages and understanding of elementary school education field. ⓑ Continually, researchers examined the problem of elementary school Moral textbook pointed out by Professor So, whether the problem was really a problem. Therefore, after asking questions such as ‘Are law-abiding, filial piety, and courtesy vertical, hierarchical, and asymmetrical virtues?’, ‘Do they promote an adaptable, uncritical attitude that avoids conflict?’, ‘Do they inertially authoritatianzied amoral virtues?’, ‘Does unification education have political unilateralism?’, and considering the context of the textbook or the situation of the class, Professor So's criticisms were answered that they were not true. In conclusion, the researchers considered Professor So's argument less persuasive. The goal of raising children as ‘intellect to think critically’ is already included in the theory and practice of moral education in elementary school. In addition, the parts that were pointed out as vestiges of authoritarian education are not acceptable from the perspective of field teachers, even from textbooks, guidebook for teacher, and basically the curriculum. This is reason it is difficult to accept to conclude that you are not doing what you are already doing and point out that there is a risk of doing what you are not doing.

본 연구의 목적은, 소병철 교수의 ｢현행 초등 도덕 교과서에 나타난 권위주의 교육의 잔 재들｣에 제시된 초등학교 ‘도덕과(道德科)’ 교육에 대한 주장 및 그 논거가 되는 『도덕』 교과서 내 사례들이 타당한지 고찰하는 것이다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위해, ⓐ 연구자들은 먼저 ‘철학적 인격교육’이라는 개념이 설득력 있는지 고찰하였다. 논의의 결과, 철학적 인격교육 의 의미가 다소 불명확하고, 이 개념의 핵심인 합리적이고 비판적인 이성은 교육적인 측면 에서 볼 때 그 자체로는 지향점으로 완전하다고 볼 수 없으며, 해당 용어가 아동의 발달 단 계에 대한 고려 및 초등학교 교육 현장에 대한 이해를 담고 있지 못하다고 판단하였다. ⓑ 이어서 연구자들은 소교수가 지적한 초등학교 『도덕』 교과서의 문제에 대해, 그 문제가 참 으로 문제인지를 살펴보았다. 그래서 ‘준법, 효와 예는 수직적･위계적･비대칭적 덕목인가?’, ‘갈등을 회피하는 순응적･무비판적 태도를 조장하는가?’, ‘무도덕적 덕목들을 관성적으로 권위화하고 있는가?’, ‘통일교육은 정치적 일방주의를 띠고 있는가?’ 등의 질문을 던진 다음, 교과서의 맥락이나 수업의 상황을 고려했을 때 소교수의 비판들은 사실이 아니라고 답변하 였다. 결론적으로, 연구자들은 소교수의 주장이 설득력이 낮고 타당하지 않다고 보았다. 학 생들을 ‘비판적으로 사고하는 지성’으로 길러야 한다는 목표는, 이미 초등학교 도덕교육의 이론과 실제에 포함되어 있다. 또한 권위주의 교육의 잔재라고 지적했던 부분들은 교과서 및 교사용 지도서, 근본적으로는 교육과정에 이르기까지 해당 부분을 맥락적으로 살펴보면 그렇지도 않거니와, 학생들과 함께 수업을 구현하는 현장 교사들의 입장에서도 수용하기가 어렵다. 이미 하고 있는 것을 하고 있지 않다고 단정하고, 하지 않는 것을 그럴 위험이 있다 고 지적하는 것은 받아들이기 어려운 까닭이다.
