This paper investigates the historical narrative of natural crises in the Speculum historiale compiled by Vincent of Beauvais in the mid-thirteenth century. Through a quantitative analysis of the entire Historiale corpus and a qualitative analysis of selected topics, this study aims to understand medieval perceptions of natural catastrophes in history. Our statistical analysis of terms related to natural catastrophes helps discern the prominent concentration of catastrophe vocabulary during some special historical moments, such as the persecution of Christians, the Byzantine Iconoclasm, and the Crusades. The qualitative analysis seeks to derive meaning from statistical data, with specific focus on two selected topics: plagues in Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, and catastrophic natural incidents in the Liège region during the Investiture Controversy.

이 논문은 13세기 중엽 뱅상 드 보베(Vincent of Beauvais)가 편찬한 『역사 보감(Speculum historiale)』을 분석하면서 중세의 역사 백과사전에서 자연과 관련된 위기를 어떻게 다루고 있는지 살펴보고 있다. 이 연구는 자연재해와 관 련된 용어의 빈도를 연구하는 양적 분석과 특정 주제를 선별하여 구체적으로 분석하는 질적 분석을 병행하고 있다. 이를 통해 역사상의 자연재해에 관해 중 세 중기의 역사가가 어떻게 인식했는가를 고찰할 수 있다. 계량적인 연구는 『역사보감』의 텍스트에서 자연재해에 관한 단어들이 기독교 박해, 비잔티움 제국의 성상파괴자 황제들의 치세나 십자군 시대 같은 특정한 역사적인 순간에 집중되어 나타남을 확인하게 해준다. 질적인 분석에서는 통계 자료에서 역사적 의미를 끌어내기 위해, 고대와 중세 초기의 역사적 전염병 및 서임권 투쟁 시기의 리에주 교구에서 발생한 자연의 이상 현상이라는 두 가지 주제를 선정해서 집중적으로 분석하고 있다.
