This study aims to explore which adult immigrants in South Korea pursue higher education and why do so, and how satisfied they are with their experiences in it. From a lifecourse perspective, we conducted an exploratory quantitative study by collecting the data of 357 participants. The primary findings are as follows: First, adult immigrants hoped to join higher education to mainly fulfill personal growth aspirations and to advance towards better career opportunities. Second, the intention to attend higher education was significantly correlated with the nationality, job status, and current residence area in Korea. However, there was no significant correlation found with educational level and job status prior to immigration, and the initial motive for immigration. Third, adult immigrants who are willing to participate in higher education preferred national or public institutions, majors in humanities, education, and social sciences, and careers as experts. Fourth, they preferred face-to-face and online classes equally. Fifth, the satisfaction level of the participants who have experienced higher education in Korea was found to be average, and the main barriers to academic maintenance were identified as the burden of tuition fees, difficulties in academic Korean language, and some family-related reasons. The implications of the results were discussed.

본 연구는 한국에서 장기체류이주민이 증가해왔고 1세대 이주민을 포함하는 성인 비율 이 높은 인구통계학적 경향에도 불구하고, 이들의 고등교육 참여의사나 경험에 대한 연구 는 부족하다고 판단하여 성인이주민들 중 누가, 왜 고등교육 진입 의향이 있는지, 학업경 험이 있다면 어떤 인식을 갖고 있는지 등에 대해 라이프코스 관점에서 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 탐색적 양적 연구를 설계해서 지역 거점 이주민 관련기관과 대학을 통해 응답 을 수집하고 애초 이주동기가 대학(원) 진학 또는 교수인 응답자를 제외한 357명의 데이터 를 분석했다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 성인이주민들은 주로 자아실현 및 전문직으 로의 상승, 자녀에게 인정받는 부모가 되기 위해 고등교육 진학을 희망하였다. 둘째, 이주 전 맥락과 초기이주동기보다는 현재 한국에서의 국적상태, 직업유무, 거주지역이 고등교육 참여의사와 유의한 연관성이 있었다. 셋째, 고등교육 진학의사가 있는 응답자들은 국·공 립기관, 인문·교육·사회계열 전공, 학업 이후 전문가 및 관련 종사자로의 진로를 주로 선호했다. 넷째, 성인이주민들은 본인에게 도움되는 수업형태로 강의실수업과 온라인수업 을 비등하게 인식했다. 다섯째, 한국 고등교육 경험이 있는 성인이주민들의 만족도는 보통 수준이며, 이주 전 직업유무와의 유의한 연관성이 발견되었다. 그리고 등록금 부담, 학술적 한국어 어려움, 가정 내 사유가 학업유지의 공통된 장애요인으로 나타났다. 상기 분석결과 를 기반으로 제도적, 교육적 시사점을 논의하였다.
