This study attempted to analyze the political characteristics of Ri Sol-ju and Kim ju-ae from the perspective of Baudrillard's "simulacre" concept. As a symbol, Ri performs the spectacle of a "socialist civilized country" and the sense of a "patriotic wife," directing a sophisticated appearance, an assistant in front of Kim Jong-un, and an image of patriotism. The final evaluation of Ri Sol-ju's symbol is simulacre, the "mother of the people," which emphasizes that governance is affectionate, both physically and politically, in the immediate aftermath of COVID-19, but at the same time. It is an attempt to conceal the disappearance of the "the great socialist family." Kim ju-ae imitates the appearance of Ri Sol-ju and Kim Jong-un who use Kim Il-sung as their archetypes, and shows symbolic characteristics that visually emphasize that he was subordinated to "blood." Kim ju-ae performs emotional labor for Kim Jong-un and performs a kind of patriarch-child exchange relationship that is loved and recognized by the patriarch as a benefit. Kim ju-ae is described as a "loved child" because she is used as a counterpart that constitutes Kim Jong-un's "warm father" identity. Kim ju-ae's emphasis on the "future" as simulacre is nothing more than a disturbance in the eyes to cover up the failures, incompetence, and futility that rule confronted in the use of military and nuclear-capability. Kim ju-ae and Ri Sol-ju are the most suitable reality and virtual for the North Korean authorities to perform the ideal relationship between family/state patriarchs and people/women. As the hybrid simulacre, Kim ju-ae and Ri Sol-ju are related to various governance issues since Kim Jong-un's reign, including nuclear and North Korean sanctions, COVID-19 and people control. However, what people want is not a fixed narrative that governance melts into the preferences of Ri Sol-ju and Kim ju-ae, but content that can be happily consumed through a fast and intense non-verbal sense. In this regard, the North Korean authorities' rule of simulacre seems to have a long way to go.

이 연구는 장 보드리야르의 ‘시뮬라크르’ 개념에서 출발하여, 김정은 집권 이후 현란하게 연출되고 있는 리설주와 김주애의 기호-정치적 특성과 그에 내재한 북한당국의 통치 논리를 분석하였다. 기호로서 리설주는 세련된 외양, 김정은의 보조자 역할, 애국의 이미지 등을 연출하며 “사회주의 문명국”의 스펙터클과 ‘애국적 아내’의 감각을 상연한다. 리설주 기호의 최종심급은 ‘인민의 어머니’라는 시뮬라크르로서, COVID-19 직후의 상황 속에서 육체적으로나 정치사상적으로 ‘낙후한 인민’들까지 지도자-당-국가가 애정으로 품는다는 것을 강조하지만 동시에, 예의 “대가정”이 사라졌음을 은폐하려는 시도이기도 하다. 김주애는 김일성을 원형으로 삼는 김정은과 리설주의 외양을 모방하며, 그가 “혈통”에 복속되었음을 시각적으로 강조하는 기호적 특성을 지닌다. 김주애는 김정은을 위해 감정노동을 수행하며 그 급부로 가부장의 사랑과 지위 인정을 받는, 일종의 가부장-자녀 교환관계를 상연한다. 김주애가 “사랑받는 자제분”으로 표현되는 것은 그가 김정은의 ‘따뜻한 아버지’ 정체성을 구성하는 카운터파트로서 활용되기 때문이다. 시뮬라크르 김주애가 강조하는 ‘미래’는, 기실 북한당국이 선군 및 핵-능력 활용에서 맞닥뜨린 실패, 통치적 무능력, 허무함 등을 은폐하려는 시선교란 전략으로 파악된다. 김주애와 리설주는 북한당국이 원하는 바 가족/국가 가부장과 주민/여성의 이상적 관계를 상연하기에 가장 적합한 실재이자 가상이다. 그 혼종적 시뮬라크르로서 김주애와 리설주는 핵과 대북제재, COVID-19와 주민 통제 등 김정은 집권 이후의 다양한 통치 이슈들과 연관되어 있다. 이러한 시뮬라크르 전략은 통치적 목표와 실재적 특성에서 일정한 딜레마를 동시에 배태할 수밖에 없는 만큼, 향후 그 추이를 기민하게 추적 관찰할 필요가 있다.
