During the Joseon Dynasty, bureaucrats and literary scholars visited scenic spots and historic sites throughout the country in their free time. They cultivated their mind and body, explored history, and even combined the characteristics of the region, leaving their various experiences as travelogues. The travels of Gyeongju during the Joseon Dynasty tell the story of the sea of Gyeongju and the life of Gyeongju people. Many literary scholars have traveled to the East Coast, admiring the sea and surrounding scenery of the Gyeongju area, and recording impressive images of local residents living in the sea. As a result, the sea and historical sites, which were originally places for excursions and appreciation, as well as seafood, which was the object of personal taste and gourmet, were gradually recognized as a living place and a means of livelihood over time, and the value and meaning of the sea changed accordingly. In short, they verified the historical facts related to Silla in Gyeongju area through the Gyeongju travel document, captured the reality of tribute and labor, including the Joseon Dynasty, and provided information about the sea and the people of the sea by realistically recording their opinions. Through this, we can once again confirm the life of Gyeongju and Gyeongju people who have always been together with Silla and Joseon, crossing time and space, including Gyeongju and the sea.

조선시대 조정관료나 문인학자들은 餘暇에 전국의 산수자연이나 명승유 적을 찾아 心身을 수양하고 역사를 탐구하며 지역의 특징을 아울러 다양한 경험을 遊記로 남겼다. 그들은 여러 지역에서 경주를 찾아와 여행하면서 다 양한 외적인 견문과 체험을 충분히 내면화하여 일기 형식의 기행문을 완성 하였다. 경주기행문에는 경주의 바다와 경주인의 생활이 고스란히 담겨 전한다. 여러 문인학자들은 경주를 유람하면서 경주지역 바다와 주변의 풍광을 감상 하는 동시에 바다를 터전으로 살아가는 지역민들의 인상적인 모습을 기록으 로 남겼다. 그 결과, 당초 유람과 감상의 장소였던 경주의 바다와 역사유적 지를 비롯하여 개인의 기호와 미식의 대상이던 해산물 등은 시간이 지나면 서 차츰 생업공간이자 생계수단으로 인식되었고, 그에 따라 바다의 가치와 의미 또한 부각되었다. 요컨대 그들은 경주기행문을 통해 경주지역의 신라 관련 역사적 사실을 조사하고, 조선시대 租稅를 비롯하여 貢物과 勞役등에 관한 민생을 포착해 내며, 여행지에서 見聞한 어업 관련 내용을 상세히 묘사함으로써 경주의 바 다와 바닷가 사람에 관한 정보를 제공하였다. 이를 통해 신라와 조선을 잇고 바다와 內地를 아우르는, 시공간을 넘나들며 기록으로 전승되는 경주의 역 사문화와 인정세태를 확인할 수 있었다.
