Jeongjae (呈才: A Dance Performed for Royal Events in Palaces of Joseon Dynasty) is called the flower of palace culture of Joseon Dynasty. Jeongjae of Joseon Dynasty into which the Chinese ancient idea of courtesy and music (禮樂思想) still keeps its tradition through Dance Company of National Gugak Center. This article, focusing on the show aesthetics of Jeongjae and its modernization, seeks for a right conservation of Jeongjae and its modernization as a creative succeeding way of it. In the age between the traditional society and modern society, success of Jeongjae met a huge inflection point. First, it lost its intuitive subjectivity that should wish for peaceful reign of the country because of Japanese occupation. Second, Jeongjae also should look for a new show aesthetics along with appearance of western style theater stage. Jeongjae had been placed in the vertical social order in accordance with social class system but it was incorporated into the capital centered horizontal order along with collapse of Joseon dynasty in the modern era. Jeongjae integrated with the modern western style theater stage was placed in a new mechanism as it was recognized as a performance with commercial values for the anonymous public. Today without dynasty system, Jeongjae exists not as something for rites but as a show performance. The modernization of Jeongjae starts from its existing position of such. What would be the most important value when Jeongjae is seeking for modernization through creative transformation out of its position as a museum heritage of the past? Would it be the spirit of BeopGoChangShin (法古創新: Creation based on Oldie)?

정재(呈才)는 조선시대 왕궁문화의 꽃으로 일컫는다. 중국 고대 예악 사상(禮樂思想)이 투영된 조선시대의 정재는 국립국악원무용단을 통해 현재 맥이 이어지고 있다. 정재의 공연미학과 현대화를 주제로 한 본 논문에서는 정재의 올바른 보존과 창조적 계승방안으로서의 현대화를 모색한다. 전통사회에서 근대사회로의 이행기, 정재의 전승은 커다란 변곡점을 맞는다. 첫째, 일제 지배라는 측면에서 나라의 태평성대를 기원한다는 정재의 선험적 주제성의 상실을 들 수 있다. 둘째, 서구식 극장무대의 등장과 더불어 정재 역시 새로운 공연미학을 추구하게 된다. 신분에 따 른 수직적 질서 속에 놓여진 정재는 근대에 이르러 조선왕조의 붕괴와 더불어 자본을 매개로 한 수평적 질서로 편입된다. 근대 서구식 극장무 대와 매개된 정재는 익명의 대중을 의식한 상품적 가치의 공연물로 인 식되면서 새로운 메커니즘에 놓인다. 왕조가 사라진 오늘날 정재는 의례용이 아닌, 보여주는 공연물로서 존재한다. 정재의 현대화는 이런 관점의 인식으로부터 출발한다. 정재가 과거의 ‘박물관적 유물’로서 존재하는 것이 아닌, 창조적 변용을 통한 현대화를 모색할 때 가장 중요한 가치는 법고창신(法古創新)의 정신이 아닐까 한다.
