This study discusses the nature of interest in subalterns appeared in Oh-hoo-kang-jeon. In this study, the pattern of interest was first examined. In Oh-hoo-kang-jeon, a subaltern is the protagonist of the relationship, whose patterns of conflict differed from the narrative of conventional love stories in which upper-class women were the protagonists of relationships. First, the threat of sexual exploitation experienced by women was represented as an actual threat rather than a narrative device to reveal the passionate affection of the male and female protagonists. Second, the psychological conflict experienced by a woman with a strong ideological orientation was realistically depicted. All of these were certain aspects of women’s ordeals that could be reproduced because the main character of the relationship in Oh-hoo-kang-jeon was a subaltern whose narrative was not restricted as strictly as upper-class women. Next, this study attempted to identify the nature of interest in the subaltern in Oh-hoo-kang-jeon by comparing the fictional form of subaltern Oh-hoo-kang with the form of subalterns appearing in historical romances that are highly reflective of reality. Since the remarriage narrative of widow Oh-hoo-kang is the main plot of Oh-hoo-kang-jeon, it was compared to the stories of widows and remarriages in Cheongguyadam that was widely read during the same period. The results showed that a widow’s remarriage in historical romance was a choice made based on a truly realistic matter to fulfill sexual desire or avoid the threat of sexual exploitation. However, Oh-hoo-kang-jeon emphasizes the love problems of Kim-hae-gap who desires to have a relationship with Oh-hoo-kang rather than the realistic problems faced by Oh-hoo-kang as a subaltern, thereby distorting the character as the object of relationship. This was more apparent in terms of the social status of Oh-hoo-kang as a concubine. Concubines, unlike upper-class women, were sexually open-minded. However, Oh-hoo-kang was a character with strong ideology, showing a character far from an actual concubine. Considering the above, the interest in the subaltern in Oh-hoo-kang-jeon could not be seen as a genuine interest in the actual existence of the subaltern itself. Accordingly, this study approached the substance of interest by analyzing how Oh-hoo-kang-jeon narratively uses interest in subalterns. The results showed that the interest in subalterns found in Oh-hoo-kang-jeon was triggered by the narrative environment of the 19th century in which the relationship narratives targeting upper-class women could no longer be in common use, and that the aspects of the hardships reproduced were by-effects that followed the devices set up to drive narrative interest when a subaltern was selected as the object of the relationship. Oh-hoo-kang-jeon passes on the tradition of a strictly male-centered love narrative, telling a story not about a subaltern Oh-hoo-kang but about an upper-class man Kim-hae-gap who wanted to have a relationship with a subaltern. Unfortunately, the ordeals of the subaltern Oh-hoo-kang reproduced in Oh-hoo-kang-jeon were limited to merely the narrative of Kim-hae-gap’s pursuit of desire.

이 글은 <오후강전>에 나타난 하위주체에 대한 관심의 성격을 규명한 논의다. 이를 위해 먼저 관심의 양상을 살폈다. <오후강전>은 하위주체를 결연의 주역으로 설정함 으로써 인물이 겪는 갈등의 양상이 상층여성이 결연의 주역으로 등장했던 기존의 애정 서사와 차이를 보였다. 첫째, 여성이 겪는 성적 수탈의 위협이 남녀 주인공의 열정적인 애정을 드러내기 위한 서사적 장치가 아닌 실질적인 위협으로서 형상화되어 있었다. 둘째, 강한 이념적 지향성을 지닌 여성이 겪는 심리적 갈등이 사실적으로 형상화되어 있었다. 이는 모두 <오후강전>이 결연의 주역으로 내세운 인물이 상층여성에 비해 서사화의 제약이 강하지 않았던 하위주체였기 때문에 재현될 수 있었던 여성 수난의 일면들이었다. 다음으로는 하위주체 오후강의 소설적 형상과 현실 반영성이 높은 야담에 등장하는 하위 주체의 형상을 비교하여 <오후강전>에 나타난 하위주체에 대한 관심의 성격을 파악하고자 했다. <오후강전>은 과부 오후강의 개가 서사가 이야기의 중심축이기에 동시기 향유된 『청구야담』 소재 과부담 및 개가담과 비교해 보았다. 그 결과 야담에서 과부의 개가는 성적 욕망의 해소나 성적 수탈의 위협으로부터 탈피하기 위한 지극히 현실적인 문제에서 선택되는 사안이었다. 그러나 <오후강전>의 경우, 오후강이 하위주체로서 겪는 현실적 문제보다는 오후강과의 결연 을 욕망하는 김해갑의 애정 문제가 강조되며 결연의 대상으로 그 형상이 굴절되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 문제는 첩이라는 오후강의 신분적 지위를 중심으로 살폈을 때 더욱 두드러졌다. 첩은 상층여성과 달리 성적 개방성을 지닌 존재였다. 그러나 오후강은 강한 이념 성을 지닌 인물로, 실제 첩의 면모와는 거리를 지닌 굴절된 형상을 하고 있었다. 이를 보았을 때, <오후강전>에서 하위주체에게 보인 관심은 하위주체라는 실체적 존재 자체에 대한 진지한 관심에서 출발한 것이라 보기 어려웠다. 이에 <오후강전>이 하위 주체에 대한 관심을 서사적으로 활용하는 방식을 분석해 관심의 실체에 접근하고자 했다. 그 결과 <오후강전>에 나타난 하위주체에 대한 관심은 상층여성을 대상으로 한 결연 서사가 더 이상 통용되기 어려웠던 19세기의 서사 환경에 의해 촉발되었고, 재현된 고난의 일면들은 하위주체가 결연 대상으로 설정되었을 때 서사의 흥미를 추동하기 위해 설정된 장치들에 의해 수반된 부수적 효과였다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. <오후강전>은 지극히 남성 중심적인 애정 서사의 전통을 잇고 있는 작품으로, 하위주체 오후강의 이야기가 아닌 하위주체와 결연하고자 했던 상층 남성 김해갑의 이야기였던 것이다. <오후강전>에 재현된 하위주체 오후강의 고난은 김해갑의 욕망 추구 서사에 한시적으로 소 비되고 만다는 점에서 아쉬움을 지녔다.
