The purpose of this paper is to examine the life and poetic world of Heo Jong. In Chapter 2, we explored Heo Jong’s life.Notable in Heo Jong’s life is the fact that he initially pursued a career in civil service, starting as a scholar-official, but due to his broad-minded character and martial abilities recognized by King Sejo, he was appointed to both civil and military positions.As a result, Heo Jong lived a life as a official with dual expertise in both civil and military affairs. In Chapter 3, we delved into Heo Jong’s bureaucratic poetic world. Heo Jong’s poetic world can be summarized into two main themes. Firstly, it focuses on his aspirations for military and political leaders and his attitude of loyalty. Heo Jong harbored ambitions to establish his career through his military and political achievements, ultimately becoming a prime minister who served and advised the monarch in governing the nation. These ambitions were expressed through imagery such as comparing himself to Bān Chāo and anticipating green plum to align the affairs of the state. However, his aspirations as military and political leader were ultimately driven by his desire to repay the monarch’s favor, leading him to demonstrate the attitude of loyalty as a subject, which is evident in his magnanimous poetic style. Secondly, Heo Jong’s poems also touch upon the difficulties in performing the duties of a military official and the emotions of worry and melancholy. While Heo Jong acknowledged that a military career was necessary to achieve fame, he often expressed the physical hardships and anxieties he faced during his long and dedicated service in this role. These emotions stemmed from the separation between his public and private selves and were revealed through poems expressing homesickness, the fleeting nature of life, lamenting his wandering status, and regret for pursuing contribution and fame.

본고는 상우당 허종의 삶과 시세계를 살펴보는데 목적을 두었다. 2장에서는 허종의 생애에 대해서 살펴보았다. 허종의 생애에서 주목되는 것은 허종이 문과에 급제하여 문 관으로서 환로생활을 시작했지만, 허종의 대범한 성품과 활쏘기 및 말타기에 능한 武才 를 알아본 세조에 의해서 무관직을 겸하게 되었다는 것이다. 이로 인해 허종은 문무겸전 의 능력으로 ‘出入將相’의 삶을 살게 되었다. 3장에서는 허종의 관료적 시세계에 대해서 살펴보았다. 허종의 시세계는 크게 두 가지 주제로 집약된다. 첫째, ‘將相’에의 抱負와 臣節의 태도이다. 허종은 무관직을 통해 功名을 세우고 중앙으로 돌아와 宰相이 되어 군주를 보필하여 국정을 다스리는 將相에의 포부를 지니고 있었다. 이러한 포부는 한나라 班超에 자신을 빗댄 것이나 梅實을 기다려 국의 간을 맞추고자 하는 調羹 이미지를 통해서 확인할 수 있었다. 그런데 ‘將相’에의 포부는 결국 군주의 은혜에 보답하기 위한 것이었다. 때문에 허종은 신하로서 君恩에 보답하고자 하는 臣節의 태도를 보여주었고, 이는 호방한 시풍으로 나타나고 있었다. 둘째, 武官職 遂行의 어려움과 憂愁의 情緖이다. 허종은 무관직이 功名을 세우기 위해 필요한 것임을 인식하면서도 자주, 오래도록 무관직을 수행하는 과정에서 겪는 물리적인 어려움이나 근심을 우수의 정서로 표출하였다. 이는 公的인 자아와 私的인 자아의 괴리에서 비롯된 것으로 고향에 대한 그리 움, 인생의 무상함, 떠도는 신세의 한탄, 공명추구에 대한 후회 등으로 시화되고 있었다.
