This article aims to analyze the triple mutual duty between parents and children revealed in Daniel S. Gregory’s Christian Ethics. The early missionary William L. Swallen used this book as a main textbook for teaching Christian ethics in Pyeongyang Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He translated this book into Korean and published it in 1915. Also noteworthy, this literature represents the first book form in the field of Christian ethics in Korean Christian history. The author considered the triple mutual duty between parents and children in Gregory’s Christian Ethics as follows: Firstly, the author dealt with the triple duty of parents to their children such as parental love for children, education of parents for children, parental control of children, and so on. Secondly, the author concentrated on the triple duty of children to their parents such as children’s love for their parents, children’s acceptance of parental lessons, the obedience of children to their parents, and so on. Thirdly, the author proposes practical lessons and implications based on the results of this study to today’s Korean Christians such as the importance of home discipline, the mutual harmonization of parents’ downward obligations and children’s upward obligations, the restoration of parental leadership for rearing children, and so forth.

이 연구에서는 그레고리(Daniel S. Gregory)의 『도덕학』(Christian Ethics)에 나 타난 부모와 자녀 사이의 상호 삼중적(三重的) 의무에 대하여 분석했다. 이 저작은 초 기 선교사 스왈런(William L. Swallen)이 평양장로회신학교(평양신학교)에서 기독교윤 리학 교과목 강의에 활용했던 핵심적인 교재였다. 스왈런은 그레고리의 이 저서를 1915년에 한글로 번역하여 출판했다. 각별히 이 문헌은 한국기독교 역사에서 기독교 윤리학 분야를 대변하는 첫 단행본의 위치를 점한다는 점에서 주목할 가치가 있다. 본 연구자는 그레고리의 『도덕학』에 나타난 부모와 자녀 사이에 부여된 상호 삼 중적 의무에 관하여 다음과 같이 숙고했다. 첫째, 부모가 자기 자녀에 대하여 감당해 야 할 삼중적 의무로서 부모가 자녀를 사랑할 것, 부모가 자녀를 교육할 것, 부모가 자녀를 치리(治理)할 것 등 부모 측의 소임에 대하여 다루었다. 둘째, 자녀가 자기 부 모에 대하여 감당해야 할 삼중적 의무로서 자녀가 부모를 사랑할 것, 자녀가 부모에 게 순량(順良)할 것, 자녀가 부모에게 순종할 것 등 자녀 측의 소임에 주안점을 두어 살폈다. 셋째, 본 논문에서 고찰한 논점들에 근거하여 가정교육의 중요성, 부모의 하 향적(下向的) 의무와 자녀의 상향적(上向的) 의무의 상호 조화, 자녀를 양육하기 위한 부모의 치리권 회복 등 오늘날 한국 그리스도인들을 선도하기 위한 실천적 교훈과 함 의를 제시했다.
