Choi Soochul, who has been a prolific writer since he published his first work in 1981, showed different perspectives in his works. However, some argued that his novels did not reflect the radical changes and the reality that South Korea faced back then, in particular, changes in political situation as well as society. But he did not take lightly the struggles that South Korea faced at all, as it was argued in this paper. In fact, he was sending some messages through his works with his own voice, trying to face the contradictory reality. Though it is not direct and straightforward, his works see through the corrupted atmosphere around us back in the day and try to get to the bottom of the problem. It is his own way of facing the reality by focusing on superstructure such as politics, media, and laws. That is, he reflects the flaws of superstructure in his novels instead of focusing on the base ones. Faced with the enormous impacts of the superstructure on the public, he was frustrated and tried to bridge the gap between an ideal and reality. This gap, however, brings about some changes in the way of his writing, which is anarchistic writing. Anarchistic writing that he pursues is translated into putting a great deal of attention towards individuals in real life. He believed that the groups cannot suppress individuals in any cases. His strict and unworldly attitude towards his work has always been crucial for him. It might look as though he did not take actions against the contradictory world where there were many changes in social, political and economic conditions. His efforts to reflects his point of view in his novels is far more essential, however, because it faces the flaw of the superstructure. Equally important, he embodies his anarchistic writings and materializes it in his work by closely looking at the Korean War and dimension.

1981년 등단한 최수철은 2023년 현재까지도 왕성하게 창작 활동을 지속하고 있다. 오랜 작가 이력에 걸맞게 그간 그는 다양한 작품세계를 선보였으나, 굴곡이 심했던 우리나라의 정치와 사회 현실에는 그리 주목하지 않았다는 평가를 받아 왔다. 하지만 본고에서 살핀 대로, 최수철이 고단한 당대의 상황을 외면하지는 않았다. 그는 거친 구호와 함성만이 아닌, 낮지만 나름의 개성적 목소리를 담은 작품들로 시대의 모순에 마주했다. 느리지만 성찰적인, 하여 현실에 간접적이고 우회적인 방식의 대응은 부조리한 시대의 요인을 보다 치밀하게 탐조하는 효과를 얻는다. 이러한 소설적 대응으로 최수철은 당대의 현상적 측면보다 정치, 언론, 법과 같은 상부구조에 대한 고찰을 한다. 최수철은 그러나 한 나라의 상부구조가 국민에 가하는 폐해에 좌절감만 맛본다. 창작에서의 이상과 현실적 간극은, 작가를 무정부주의자의 글쓰기로 이월시키는 근인(根因)으로 작용한다. 언어의 엄결성을 누구보다 중시하는 그가 지향하는 문학적 무정부주의의 글쓰기는, 바로 전체에 억압당하는 개인에 대한 지대한 관심으로 실천된다. 개인에 대한 확고한 그의 신념은 1990년대 이후에 발간되는 많은 작품들에서도 발견된다. 그리고 그 점은 한국 전쟁과 분단 문제를 다룬 2010년 이후의 작품들에서도 계속되고 있다.
