This paper sheds light on Murakami Haruki's views and strategies on translation as stated in the conversation booklets on translation and finds out how Murakami’s translational views and strategies have been put into practice by referring to his translated texts in the early 1980s. In the conversation booklets on translation, Murakami stresses that translation is the act of a translator who empathizes with the author, and hence, each translator has his/her own characteristics that cannot be replaced by others. Importantly, Murakami’s style is that he tries to find the breaths and meanings of the original text and translate them into Japanese, rather than executing formality matching of the external structures of the original text. As an example, the present paper refers to a part of a short story written by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald and translated by Murakami Haruki with special affection, and shows how his translational views were put into texts. With a good understanding of the linguistic characteristics of both English and Japanese, Murakami Haruki knows how to transform the breaths of an original text into a unique Japanese text. The translated texts by Murakami Haruki, which contains his translational views and literal translation, deliver more than what the original texts hold and show an uniqueness in literary translation.

본 논문은 무라카미 하루키(村上春樹, 1949-현재)와 시바타 모토유키(柴田元幸, 1954-현재)가 나눈 번역 대담집을 참고하여 무라카미 하루키의 번역에 관한 관점과 방법론을 들여다보고, 그가 1980년대 초에 번역한 텍스트를 통해 그 실천을 조명했다. 무라카미 하루키는 시바타 모토유키와 나눈 번역 대담에서 번역이 원작자에게 감정을 이입하는 행위임을 강조하며 번역의 대체 불가능성을 주장한다. 그는 원문의 표면적인 구조를 중시하는 형식적인 등가보다 원문 텍스트가 품고 있는 의미와 영어의 호흡에 주 목하고, 이를 적절한 일본어 문법으로 옮기는 축어적 번역 방법에 초점을 둔다. 원작자만 큼이나 일본어 독자라는 실재의 대상을 의식해야 했기 때문이다. 본문의 마지막 장에서는 무라카미 하루키가 남다른 애정으로 번역한 프랜시스 스콧 키 피츠제럴드(Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, 1896-1940)의 단편 작품을 들여다보았다. 무라 카미 하루키는 원작자와의 관계를 중시했던 그의 번역관처럼 작품에 깃든 원작자의 감정 에 집중했고, 언어적 특성의 이해를 토대로한 축어적 번역 방법을 통해 문장의 리듬을 만들어내며 텍스트를 변주한다. 그의 번역관과 축어적 번역 방법을 통해 쓰인 번역문 텍 스트에는 원문 텍스트에서 드러나지 않은 무언가가 더해지며 문학 번역의 또 다른 측면 을 엿볼 수 있게 한다.
