The titles ‘father of children without property,’ ‘father of underprivileged youth,’ and ‘torch of Korean youth’ were given to Kwon Se-yeol(Francis Kinsler), the founder of the Korean Bible Club. This study focused on several aspects. First, I looked at Kwon Se-yeol in Pyengyang, who was the seedling of Kwon Se-yeol’s missionary work in Korea and where he discovered missionary prospects. Compared to Pyongyang’s Christian education model, what was the founding spirit was reviewed. Subsequently, the changes in the ideology and program of the Bible Club were considered as various factors that contributed to the spread and success of the Bible Club movement nationwide. In addition, the training of leaders and the institutional magazine Leader, which were key elements in the spread and organization of the Bible Club, were analyzed, and finally, the method of securing funds for the Bible Club was investigated. It is self-evident that Kwon Se-yeol, who was the central axis in the formation of the Bible Club, was the ‘spirit’ that presented the direction and method in the formation of a rapidly changing modern civil society.

‘무산 어린이의 아버지’, ‘불우청소년의 아버지’, ‘한국 청소년의 횃불’ 이라는 호칭은 한국 성경구락부의 창설자인 권세열(Francis Kinsler) 에게 부여된 이름이다. 본 연구는 한국의 성경구락부 형성과정에서 권세열의 역할을 집중 조명했다. 먼저 권세열의 한국선교의 모판이었 고 선교적 전망을 발견했던 평양의 권세열을 살펴보았다. 평양의 기독교 교육 모델과 비교하여 창립 정신은 무엇이었는지 검토했다. 이어서 성경구락부 운동이 전국적으로 확산되고 성공할 수 있었던 다양한 요 인들로 성경구락부의 이념과 프로그램의 변화들을 고찰했다. 그리고 성경구락부의 확산과 조직화를 이루어나갈 때 핵심 요소였던 지도자 훈련과 기관지 『지도자』를 분석했고, 마지막으로 성경구락부의 기금 확보 방식을 조사했다. 성경구락부의 형성과정에서 중심축이었던 권 세열은 급격히 변모하는 근대 시민사회 형성에서 그 방향과 방식을 제시했던 ‘정신’이었음은 자명한 사실이다.
