This study aims to analyze the meaning of the equivalence relation and examine the appropriateness of the term by paying attention to the newly introduced content element ‘equal sign and equivalence relation’ in the 2022 revised elementary mathematics curriculum. Based on the dictionary and mathematical meanings of the terms, the examples from previous studies of mathematics education, the cases used in past curricula, and the curriculum draft reports, it was confirmed that the curriculum intends to emphasize the understanding of equality as a relational symbol. Accordingly, considering the possibility of using the term 'equality relation' which is one of the equivalence relations, this study proposes a reconsideration of the term 'equivalence relation' in elementary school mathematics, grounded in three aspects: the need to recognize the equivalence relations other than the equality relation, the intention of the curriculum to emphasize the relational understanding of the equality sign and the examination of the validity of the changes in the terms already used in the previous curriculum.

본 연구는 2022 개정 초등 수학과 교육과정에 새로 도입된 내용 요소인 ‘등호와 동치 관계’에 주목하여 동치 관계의 의미를 분석하고 용어의 적절성에 대해 검토 하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 용어의 사전적, 수학적 의미와 더불어 수학교육 선행연 구에서의 용례, 역대 교육과정에서의 도입 사례, 교육과정 시안 보고서 등에 기초 하여 교육과정에서의 의도가 관계적 기호로서의 등호에 대한 이해를 강조하려는 것임을 확인하였다. 이에 동치 관계 중 하나인 상등 관계로 표현하는 안을 고려하 여, 초등학교 수학에서 동치 관계라는 용어에 대한 재고를 세 가지 측면에 근거하 여 제안하였다. 동치 관계 중 상등 관계가 아닌 관계에 대한 인식 필요, 등호의 관 계적 의미 이해를 강조하는 교육과정의 의도, 이전 교육과정에서 이미 사용된 용어 의 변화 타당성 확인이다.
