This paper aims to reveal the politeness and impoliteness strategies in Korean TV current debate conversations. In other words, the purpose of this paper is to find out the strategies of current debate conversations from the view of conversation analysis based on the politeness theory of Leech (2014) and its politeness principles. TV debate is a sort of argumentation discourse which deals with current issues to be resolved by participants who have different views of each other. This paper shows that debaters tends to use impoliteness strategies for attacking their opponent’s honor and consequently causing disharmony more than they use politeness strategies. This means that debaters intentionally use many kinds of face threatening acts in order to achieve their ultimate goals of leading the conversation and winning the debate. This paper also investigates how politeness strategies are employed to establish good interpersonal relationships and to strengthen one’s logical legitimacy in Korean society according to Leech’s (2014) politeness theory. Further studies are advised to include analysis of more communication strategies and non-verbal communication behaviors to confirm the effectiveness of the findings based on Leech’s politeness theory.

본고는 TV 쟁점 토론을 경쟁적 대화 유형으로 보고, 토론자들이 ‘설득’ 이라는 의사소통 목적을 달성하기 위해 전략적으로 사용하는 공손성과 불손성 표현을 Leech(2014)의 공손성 이론을 기반으로 분석하였다. 2장에서 는 TV 쟁점 토론의 대화 유형학적 특성과 Leech(2014)의 공손성 모델 이론 을 고찰하고, 3장에서는 TV 쟁점 토론에서 나타나는 공손성과 불손성 실 현 양상을 기술하였다. 연구 결과, TV 쟁점 토론에서 토론자들은 ‘설득’이 라는 의사소통 목적을 달성하기 위해 한국 문화의 전통상 상대의 체면을 보호하는 공손성 전략을 구사하기도 하지만 의견 대립이 첨예할 때에는 공손성 전략에 비해 불손성 전략을 빈번하고 다양하게 구사하며 경쟁적 대화를 한다는 것을 확인하였다.
