This paper focuses on the extraordinary relationship, friendship, and literary influences of two representative Korean writers in Japan, novelist Kim Seok-beom and poet Kim Si-jong. It examines the literary differences revealed in the transcript of their conversations Why Have You Been Writing and Why Have You Been Silent (2001). Kim Seok-beom and Kim Si-jong have exchanged literary influences, friendship, and stimulation for many years as diasporic writers in Japan through their deep trust in each other. In this sense, their relationship can be viewed as a kind of “two people sharing a desk”. There are many meaningful similarities and differences between their writings. Especially, the differences related to their direct experience of the Jeju 4·3 Incident create a very meaningful contrast in their literary works surrounding the question of how to represent the Jeju 4·3 Incident. Kim Si-jong, who directly participated in the Jeju 4·3 Incident as an organizer, doesn’t have many poems that directly address the incident in his poetry due to the burden of the experience. Only a few of his poems deal with the incident indirectly and metaphorically. Novelist Kim Seok-beom, on the other hand, did not experience the Jeju 4·3 Incident firsthand, so he uses his imagination to create a structural and holistic representation of the incident. For him, fiction is an important means to reach a universal truth. The difference between the two writers strikingly illustrates how one’s direct experience of an important historical event affects the way one writes about it.

이 논문은 대표적인 재일 한인 디아스포라 문인인 소설가 김석범과 김시종의 각별한 관계와 우정, 문학적 영향 관계에 주목하면서 2001년에 출간된 둘의 대 담 기록 󰡔왜 계속 써왔는가 왜 침묵해 왔는가󰡕에 드러난 문학적 차이에 대해 고 찰한 성과이다. 김석범과 김시종은 오랜 세월 동안 일본에서 디아스포라 문인으 로 창작 활동을 수행하면서 서로 깊은 신뢰를 통해 문학적 영향과 우정, 자극을 주고받아왔다. 이런 의미에서 이 둘의 관계를 ‘두 사람이 함께 책상 들기’라는 차원에서 바라볼 수 있을 것이다. 그들의 글쓰기에는 여러 의미 있는 공통점과 차이점이 존재한다. 그 차이점 중에서 제주 4·3의 직접 체험 여부를 둘러싼 차이는 이들의 문학세계에 ‘제주 4·3을 어떤 방식으로 형상화할 것인가?’라는 문제를 둘러싼 매우 의미 깊은 대 조를 낳았다. 제주 4·3 때 조직원으로 직접 참여한 김시종 시인은 그 부담감으로 인해 자 신의 시에서 제주 4·3을 직접 다룬 시가 많지 않다. 몇 편의 시에서 간접적이며 은유적으로 제주 4·3을 다루었을 뿐이다. 이에 비해 소설가 김석범은 제주 4·3 을 직접 체험하지 못했기에 개연성 있는 허구를 통해 제주 4·3을 구조적이며 총 체적으로 형상화하기 위해 노력한다. 그에게 허구는 보편적 진실에 이르기 위한 중요한 수단이다. 이러한 둘의 차이는 중요한 역사적 사건의 직접 체험 여부가 글쓰기 방식에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 인상적으로 보여준다.
