This paper analyzes the staging and acting of North Korean’s ‘light comedy’ in the 21st century to study trends in contemporary North Korean theater. It aims to lay a technical foundation for inter-Korean performing arts exchange. The scope of this study is limited to works performed Kim Jong-un era. What is notable about North Korean theater during this period is the recreation of classics and attempts at new style. Therefore, the focused on this study are the light comedy (2010) and (2017). is a representative theater of North Korean’s light comedy, which was first performed in 1961 and was recreated in 2010. is based on a real story and attempts to combine the cinematic and the theatrical. For this study, the researcher combined literature research and video analysis of the performance. The literature study centered on North Korea's literary theory of the period. North Korean literary theories include ‘socialist realism’, ‘juche realism’, and ‘seed theory’ as specific guidelines for ‘juche realism’. ‘Juche realism’ has been the ideological standard for North Korean theater creation for 40 years and is still in effect today. In this study, I collected and analyzed Literary text of and as well as performance criticisms published in North Korean journals. For the performance video analysis, I watched the videos of performed in 2010 and performed in 2017 to study the staging and acting techniques. The staging of 21st-century North Korean based on the ‘flowing three-dimensional stage’ characteristic of North Korean theater, and the acting was based on symbolic physical actions centered on speech. The study of North Korean theater in the 2020s and beyond remains as a follow-up work, and it is hoped that such a study will contribute to mutual research and exchange between North and South Korean theater.

이 논문은 21세기 북한 ‘경희극’의 무대 연출과 연기를 분석함으로써 동시대 북한연극을 경향을 연구한다. 그리고 이를 통해 남북한 공연예술 교류의 기술적 토대 마련하고자 하였다. 이 연구의 범위는 김정은 후계시대와 김정은 시대에 공연된 작품으로 한정하였다. 이 시기 북한연극에서 주목할 것은 고전의 재창작과 새로운 형식의 시도라고 할 수 있다. 그래서 이 연구의 구체적 대상을 경희극 <산울림>과 <북부전역>으로 하였다. <산울림>은 북한 경희극의 대표적인 작품으로 1961년에 초연되고 2010년에 재공연되었다. 이 작품은 2년간 500회를 공연하고 약 40만 명의 북한 주민이 관람하였다. 2017년 공연된 <북부전역>은 실화를 바탕으로 창작되었고 영화적인 것과 무대적인 것의 결합을 시도한 작품이다. 본 연구자는 이 연구를 위해 문헌연구와 공연영상분석을 병행하였다. 문헌연구는 북한의 시기별 문예이론을 중심으로 살펴보았는데 이는 동시대 북한연극을 이해하기 위한 전제조건이었다. 북한의 문예이론은 ‘사회주의적 사실주의’와 ‘주체사실주의’ 그리고 ‘주체사실주의’의 구체적 지침으로서 ‘종자론’이 있다. ‘사회주의적 사실주의’는 북한 초기 이론으로 계급과 인민(민중) 민주주의에 기반한 사회변혁이론이라면 ‘주체사실주의’는 주체사상의 예술적 실현을 위한 것으로 당과 수령중심, 민족주의가 결합된 북한식 문예이론이다. ‘주체사실주의’는 40년 동안 북한연극 창작의 사상적 기준이 되었고 오늘날에도 여전히 유효하다. 또한 이 연구에서는 <산울림>과 <북부전역>의 희곡과 북한 저널에 실린 공연 비평을 수집하여 연구하였다. 공연영상분석은 2010년 공연된 <산울림>과 2017년 공연된 <북부전역>의 영상을 시청하고 무대 연출의 특징 및 연기술을 탐구하였다. 21세기 북한 경희극의 무대 연출은 북한연극의 특징인 ‘흐름식 입체 무대’를 바탕으로 형상화되었고 연기는 화술을 중심으로 기호적인 신체행동연기가 구현되었다. 2020년대 이후 북한연극 연구를 후속과제로 남기며 이러한 연구가 남북한 연극 상호연구와 교류에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.
