Recently interest in media law education in Korea has grown considerably. This has something to do with the fact that libel suits against the media have drastically increased in the past two decades. In relation with the numerical increase in libel suits, many journalism scholars argue that media law education should be intensified with the curricula restructured. As a matter of fact, it was in the late 1950s that the media law education in Korean universities had begun. In other words, media law education was taught as a core curriculum in the departments of journalism in Korean universities for the last 50 years. Media law education was also considered very significant among Korean journalists. Nevertheless, media law education (including media ethics education) in Korea was relatively underdeveloped compared to other area of journalism and was not systematically taught in academy. Also, it was said that the media law education was heavily influenced by American media law education system. The major purpose of the paper is to review how the media law education in academy has evolved for the last half century and to analyze what types of problematic issues were generated by the influences of the U.S. media law education. In order to carry out the purpose, this paper examines educational curriculum of the universities, focused on how the media-law-related classes are taught in the journalism schools.

한국에 있어 언론법제 교육이 시작된 것이 50년이 되었다는 사실을 아는 사람은 거의 없다. 이는 언론학 분야의 제반 분야와 거의 같은 시기에 법제교육이 실시되었다는 사실을 의미한다. 본 연구는 한국에 있어서의 언론법제 교육이 어떻게 실시되어 왔는가를 개괄적으로 고찰한다. 언론법제 교육이 실제로 법학 계열보다는 언론학 계열에서 학문화가 시작되었다는 사실에 입각하여 본 연구에서는 언론학 분야에서의 언론법제 교육의 실상을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 언론법제 강의가 개설되어 있는 대학이나 강사들로부터 언론법제 관련 과목의 강의계획서를 수집하여 이를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 언론법제 교육이 미국과 같이 체계적으로 이루어지지 못하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 언론법 관련 전공자 수가 적고 언론법제 관련된 교과서의 종류가 적거나 업데이트가 제때 이루어지지 못하는 이유로 언론법제 교육이 제대로 실시되고 있는지 불명확하다. 또한 강의계획서 분석결과 여타 다른 언론학 분야와 마찬가지로 언론법제 영역도 미국의 영향을 받은 것으로 보인다. 이는 수업에서 강의되는 주제별 내용에서도 살펴볼 수 있는데, 이는 미국 언론법제 수업에서 이루어지는 언론자유이론 및 명예훼손 등10대 주제의 경우 한국의 언론법제 수업시간에도 강의되고 있었으며, 현재 언론법제 분야에서 활발한 강의와 연구를 하고 있는 학자들의 대부분이 미국에서 학위를 한 점에서 살펴볼 수 있다. 앞으로 언론법제 교육에 대한 필요성과 중요성은 학계뿐만 아니라 언론 현업에서도 강조되고 있다. 변화 하는 미디어 환경에 맞도록 언론법제의 강의 내용도 변해야 할 것으로 판단된다.
