This paper empirically examines the effects of R&D cooperation activities and innovation barriers on innovation output using 2006 and 2018 Korean Innovation Survey data for manufacturing firms implemented by STEPI. Empirical results show that R&D cooperation activities should affect innovation performance differently. All types of cooperation activities such as internal cooperation, vertical cooperation, horizontal cooperation, and cooperation with research institutes and universities have statistically significant and positive effects on the probability of introducing new product innovations. On the other hand, product process innovations are not affected by cooperation with research institutes and universities. Next, the effects of barriers to innovation are different, depending on the types of innovations and characteristics of R&D cooperation activities. Barriers to innovation such as financial constraints, deepening market competition and uncertainty, and economic risks have positive effects on the probability of introducing new product innovations. However, the former barriers have negative effects but the latter barriers have positive effects on the probability of introducing process innovations. Finally, the higher ratio of research workers as a proxy for absorptive capacity of firms is found to have positive effects on new product innovation of R&D cooperation activities through spillover effects of information flows but negative effects on process innovation.

이 논문은 한국 과학기술정책연구원의 2016년과 2018년 제조업 부문 한국기업혁신조사 통계자료를 통합하고 R&D협력을 4개의 유형으로 구분하여 혁신성과에 미치는 효과를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과를 요약하면, R&D협력은 기술혁신유형과 상관없이 신제품혁신에는 긍정적인 성과를 미치고 있다. 수 평적 협력, 즉 경쟁사와의 협력, 공급자 및 고객과의 수직적 협력, 대학 및 연구기관과의 협력은 신제품에 혁신에는 모두 긍정적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났지만 공정혁신에는 연구기관과 대학과의 협력은 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 혁신의 장애요인이 혁신성과에 미치는 효과 역시 기술혁신의 유형과 장애요 인 성격에 따라 달리 나타나고 있다. 신제품혁신에 있어서 자금조달의 중요성이 긍정적으로 영향을 미치지만, 시장 경쟁 심화와 불확실성, 그리고 경제적 위험성의 중요성은 영향을 미치지 않고 있다. 하지만 공정혁신에서는 자금조 달 부족이 부정적인 효과를 나타냈지만, 시장경쟁 심화와 불확실성 및 경제적 위험성은 오히려 공정혁신에 긍정적 인 효과를 나타냈다. 이는 신제품혁신이 시장의 상품 수요 변화에 민감하게 반응하지만, 공정혁신은 생산과 공급적 요인에 의해 촉진될 될 수 있음을 시사한다.
