The purpose of this study was to propose an appropriate plan for students' participation in the university decision-making process in light of the reality of Korean universities where the legal and institutional enforcement of students' participation and communication in university decision-making as well as the demands of members of the university have been increased. The document analysis method and the case study of Stanford University in the US were conducted. This study found that Stanford University officially formalizes student participation in various committee activities, not only student affairs areas which directly related to students, but also committees that indirectly affect students such as boards of trustees or faculty councils. Stanford University also ensures student participation in a wide range of areas, and provides most of the information and detailed notices about student participation. The results of this study suggested that the perception of student participation in universities in Korea should be changed and information disclosure and guidance for student participation should be provided in detail.

본 연구는 대학 의사결정에 있어서 학생들의 참여와 소통에 대한 법적, 제도적 강제와 학내 구성원들의 요구가 증가하고 있는 한국 대학의 현실에 비추어, 대학 의사결정 구조에 학생들이 참여할 수 있는 방안을 제언하고자 하였다. 연구와 관련된 제반 자료 및 학술 논 문을 수집 분석하는 문헌 분석과 미국 스탠퍼드 대학에 대한 사례를 분석하였다. 미국 스 탠퍼드 대학은 각종 위원회 활동에 있어서 학생 참여를 공식화하며, 이러한 학생 참여는 광범위하고 다양한 영역, 즉 학생과 직접 관련된 학생처 이외에도 대학의 이사회나 교수평 의회처럼 학생들에게 간접적으로 영향을 미치거나 표면적으로는 무관하게 보이는 위원회 까지 모두 포함하고 있다. 또한, 학생참여에 대한 대학의 결정 사항을 대부분 공개하고, 학 생참여가 필요한 내용이나 참여 절차 등에 대해서는 상세하게 안내하는 특징을 가지고 있 다. 스탠퍼드 대학은 다른 구성원과 마찬가지로 학생 의견 반영이 대학 이익을 극대화할 수 있다는 기본 인식을 가지고 있으며 이를 통해 대학의 발전을 이루고 있다. 이러한 결과 를 바탕으로 향후 우리나라 대학의 학생참여에 대한 인식 전환이 필요하며, 대학의 학생 참여를 위한 정보 공개 및 안내가 상세히 제공되어야 한다는 것을 제안하였다.
