The janggu gueum can be categorized into 24 different sounds. Among them, there are 10 monosyllabic sounds and 14 sounds with two or more syllables. The monosyllabic sounds effectively represent the fundamental attributes of performance techniques. Among the initial consonants, ‘ㄱ’ indicates the gungpyeon technique, while ‘ㄷㆍㄸ’ indicates the chaepyeon technique. Vowels distinguish between different techniques such as yeolchae or gunggulchae. For example, ‘Ah’ represents the chaepyeon technique, ‘Wu’ represents the gungpyeon technique, and ‘Eo’ indicates both sides. Final consonants indicate the closing or opening of sounds, where ‘ㅇ’ primarily denotes the continuation of a sound, while ‘ㄱ’ is used to strike forcefully or to dampen resonance. A comparison between the sounds of accompanying janggu gueum and the sounds of samulnori janggu gueum reveals that both use the basic sound ‘deong’ in the yangpyeon(both sides) technique. However, in the chaepyeon technique, there is a distinction between the sounds ‘deok’ and ‘tta’, while in the gungpyeon technique, the sounds ‘kung’ and ‘gung’ are differentiated.

사물놀이 장구 구음은 모두 24가지로, 1음절 구음이 10가지, 2음절 이상의 구음은 14가지로 나 타나고 있다. 1음절 구음은 연주법의 기본 속성을 잘 드러내는데, 초성 중 ‘ㄱ’은 궁편을 지시하며, ‘ㄷㆍㄸ’은 채편을 지시하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 중성인 모음은 열채나 궁굴채의 타법을 구분하 는데, ‘아’는 채편을, ‘우’는 궁편을 나타내며, ‘어’는 양편을 지시하는 용례로 제시된다. 종성은 소리 의 막고 열림을 나타내는데, ‘ㅇ’은 소리의 지속을 주로 표시하며, ‘ㄱ’은 강하게 치거나 울림을 막는 용도로 사용된다. 반주 장구의 구음과 사물놀이 장구 구음을 비교한 결과, 양편 주법의 기본구음은 반주 장구와 사 물놀이 장구 모두 구음 ‘덩’을 사용하지만, 채편 주법의 기본 구음은 ‘덕’과 ‘따’로 구분되며, 궁편 주법 역시 ‘쿵’과 ‘궁’으로 구별된다.
