The Woman’s Mission Association plays a significant role in Korean Church. The activities of the Woman’s Mission Association which was called the Women’s Auxiliary in the beginning had been initiated at Pyeongyang and its vicinity from the back in 1898. By the way, the a missionary named Seo Seo- Pyeong(Elizabeth J. Shepping), who was dispatched to Korea by the Southern Presbyterian Church in the US, established and organized the foundation for the Women’s Auxiliary in fullscale and significantly affected it. She created the first Women’s Auxiliary at the Gwang-ju Geumjeong Church in 1922 before a Women’s Auxiliary was organized in the General Association of the Presbyterian Church of Korea in 1928 and gradually expanded its organization by establishing and organizing the Women’s Auxiliary while making a round of each local church. This study aims to explore the activities and influence of the missionary Elizabeth J. Shepping on Women’s Auxiliary. In particular, this study examines the activities and influence of Shepping mostly based on the records of the General Association of the Presbyterian Church of Korea and data from the Woman’s Mission Association.

한국교회에서 여전도회의 역할은 실로 막중해 왔다. 초기 부인조력회 (Women’s Auxiliary)라 부른 여전도회의 움직임이 1898년부터 평양 등 지에서 있은 후, 1928년 ‘조선예수교장로회 부인전도회’로 발족된 한국교 회의 여전도회는 일제강점기, 6·25전쟁 등 민족의 수난기에도 복음 전파, 교육, 문화, 선교, 독립운동의 참여, 교회의 재건 등에 지속적으로 힘써 왔 다. 그런데 한국교회에 본격적으로 여전도회의 기틀을 마련하고 조직화 하며 영향을 끼친 이들에 바로 미국 남장로교 선교사 서서평(Elizabeth J. Shepping)이 있다. 서서평은 자기 이름도 쓸 줄 모르는 한국 여성들에게 한글보급운동을 펼치는 동시에 성경을 가르치며 ‘부인조력회’를 조직해 나 갔다. 1928년 대한예수교장로회 총회에서 여전도회의 연합회가 조직되기 이전인 1922년 첫 번째 여전도회를 광주 금정교회에서 조직한 후 각 지역 교회를 순회하며 여전도회를 점차적으로 조직해 나갔다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 선교사 서서평의 한국교회 여전도회 사역에 관 하여 활동과 영향을 살펴본다. 특별히 한국교회 초기 여전도회사(史)에 중 요한 대한예수교장로회 교단총회 회록과 여전도회 자료들을 중심으로 서 서평의 여전도회 활동을 살피고, 여전도회의 3대 목적사업인 선교·교육· 봉사에 따른 그 영향에 관한 연구를 시도한다.
