The purpose of this study is to examine the perception and issues of people with disability in the religious discourse on disability, as well as attitudes and approaches to persons with disability. For the analysis of disability discourse in the religious community, I first look at official documents of religions related to disability. Second, an analysis is conducted on how religious narratives affect the narratives of religious people’s disabilities. The disability narrative contains the cultural pathways and ways through which religion makes meaning of disability. This analysis shows that despite the time and effort of the Korean Catholic Church and Protestant Churches to pay great attention to the reality of people with disability, so many persons with disability are facing various barriers established by religion. In particular, religious narratives admire the perfection of beauty and goodness of God’s creation have the effect of supplying narrative resources that bind person with disability to two perspectives of charity and treatment in the religious sentiment of recognizing the disabled as “a flawed being.” Both the Korean Catholic Church and the Protestant Churches have made efforts for the participation and equality of persons with disabilities. And both religious groups emphasize that both disabled and non-disabled people are equal beings created in ‘God’s image’. Nonetheless, the complex religious views and religious meanings of disability constructed through the medical disability model make people with disabilities engulfed in anxious affect. In addition, the discriminatory terms and expressions of disability in Won Buddhism and Korean Buddhism, especially the Buddhist concept of karma, show the degree of awareness of disability.

본 연구는 종교의 장애담론에 나타난 장애인식과 쟁점, 그리고 장애인에 대한 태도와 접근 방식을 살펴보는 데 목적을 둔다. 종교계의 장애담론 분석을 위해 우선 장애와 관련된 종교의 공식 문서들을 살펴본다. 두 번째로 종교인의 장애서사에서 종교적 서사가 어떤 영향을 미치는 지에 대한 분석이 이루어진다. 장애서사에는 종교가 장애를 의미화하는 문화적 경로와 방식이 잘 담겨 있다. 이러한 분석을 통해서 한국천주교회와 개신교가 장애인의 현실에 큰 관심을 기 울인 시간과 노력에도 불구하고 장애인은 종교가 세운 여러 장벽에 직면하고 있음이 나타난다. 특히 창조의 선함과 완전함을 지향하는 기독교의 종교적 서사는 장애인을 ‘흠이 있는 존재’로 서 인식하며 시혜와 치료의 두 시각에 장애인을 묶어두는 서사적 효과를 낳는다. 한국천주교회 와 개신교 모두가 장애인과 비장애인 모두 ‘하느님의 형상’으로 창조된 동등한 존재임을 강조 하고 장애인의 참여와 평등을 위한 노력을 해왔음에도 불구하고, 의학적 장애모델과 장애의 종 교적 의미화를 통해서 구성되는 종교의 복합적인 시선은 장애인을 불안한 정동에 휩싸이게 한 다. 또한 원불교와 불교에서 나타나는 장애 차별적인 용어와 표현, 특히 불교적 업의 관점 등은 장애에 대한 인식 정도를 보여준다.
