While civil society exists as the foundation of NGOs, NGOs with expertise in more specific areas play an important role in providing services, promoting change, and coping with conflicts. In particular, among various activities, the educational function for peacebuilding can be said to be an important role of NGOs. Based on this point of view, this study aimed to analyze the activities of the Women’s Federation for World Peace in Korea, which has been engaged in activities such as peace and unification, education, humanitarian support, peace network, service, and international cooperation based on civil society. To this end, first, this paper examined the characteristics of the Women’s Federation for World Peace as a civil society NGO through theoretical consideration of civil society and NGOs. Second, this study analyzed and evaluated the activities of the Women’s Federation for World Peace over the past three years. Finally, the direction for the development of the Women’s Federation for World Peace activities at the domestic and international level was presented. They are promoting specialized peace education, reviewing humanistic approaches, linking peace education for post-conflict societies with humanitarian aid activities, pursuing peace/reconciliation/integrated narratives, using ideas for peace education in Northern Ireland, and practicing learner-centered education methods instead of lecture-centered methods presented.

시민사회가 NGO의 토대로 존재하는 반면, 보다 구체적 영역에 대한 전문기술을 갖춘 NGO는 서비스를 제공하고 변화를 촉진하며 갈등에 대처하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 특히 다 양한 활동 중 평화구축을 위한 교육기능은 NGO의 중요한 역할이다. 이러한 관점을 기초로 본 연구는 시민사회를 기반으로 평화와 통일, 교육, 인도적 지원, 평화 네트워크, 봉사, 국제협력 등의 활동을 해온 한국의 세계평화여성연합 활동을 분석하고 발전 방향을 모색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 첫째, 본 논문은 시민사회와 NGO에 대한 이론적 고찰을 통해 시민사회 NGO로서 세계평화여성연합의 특성을 살펴보고, 둘째, 세계평화여성연합의 최근 3년간의 활동을 분석, 평가하며, 끝으로 국내적 및 국제적 차원에서의 세계평화여성연합 활동의 발전 방향을 특화된 평화교육의 추진, 인문학적 접근의 재검토, 분쟁 후 사회 대상 평화교육과 인도적 지원 활동의 연계, 평화· 화해· 통합서사 지향, 북아일랜드 평화교육 아이디어 활용, 강의 중심에서 학습자 중심 교육 방법 실천으로 제시하였다.
