Donghak has a high possibility of expanding its scope and making it current because it integrates Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism and has the characteristic of ‘Muwi-ihwa’. The purpose of this study is to explore the modern interpretation and applicability of Donghak Thoughts, focusing on the issues of life, humanity and death. The contents of the study are as follows. First, Donghak thought was interpreted as a matter of life. The contents and characteristics of Donghak’s life thought were presented through the viewpoints of Kim Ki-jeon, Jang Il-soon, and Yun No-bin and the scriptures of Donghak. Second, Donghak thought was interpreted as a personality problem. The “Seong-Gyeong-Sin” and today’s personality theory were used as interpretative data. Third, Donghak’s view of life and death was interpreted centering on Son Byeong-hee and Lee Don-hwa and modern theories. The results of the study are as follows. First, as the concept of life in Donghak, Hanul life, symbiosis life, and spiritual life were presented. Life is not a concept opposed to death, but a concept that embraces life and death, and has holistic and organic characteristics. Second, it was argued that the concept of personality in Donghak is a concept that encompasses ethical, psychological, moral, and religious viewpoints. Third, the concept of death in Donghak emphasized the completion of human nature through the return to the original position of human beings through the realization of Humanity and ‘Transforming of the Body to the Nature’.

동학은 유불도를 통합하고 무위이화를 특성으로 하기 때문에 그 외연을 확장하고 현재화할 수 있는 가능성이 매우 높은 학문이다. 본 연구는 생명과 인성 그리고 죽음의 문제를 중심으로 동학의 현대적 재해석과 적용 가능성을 탐색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동학사상을 생명의 문제로 해석하였다. 김기전, 장일순, 윤노빈 등의 관점과 동학 경전을 통해 동학의 생명사상의 내용과 특징을 제시하였다. 둘째, 동학의 생명사상을 인성문제로 해석하였다. 성경신 및 오늘날 인성이론을 해석 자료로 활용하였다. 셋째, 동학의 생사관을 손병희와 이돈화 및 현대이론을 중심으로 해석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동학의 생명 개념으로 한울 생명, 공생하는 생명, 영성적 생명을 제시하였다. 생명은 죽음과 반대되는 개념이 아니라 삶과 죽음을 포용하는 개념으로 전체적이며 유기체적인 특성을 지닌다. 둘째, 동학의 인성 개념은 윤리적 관점, 심리학적 관점, 도덕적 관점, 종교적 관점을 포괄하는 개념임을 주장하였다. 셋째, 동학의 죽음의 개념은 이신환성과 인격성 실현을 통해 인간의 본래 자리로 돌아가는 환원으로 인간성의 완성이라는 점을 강조하였다.
