Sustainable development of the global economy and society has become a hot topic for ESG(environmental, social, and governance) activities to determine a country’s competitiveness beyond the non-financial evaluation of individual companies. This study aims to examine ESG research trends by topic through unstructured data analysis and suggest future academic research and ESG activities. We collected 346 papers on ESG among international journal papers published in the ‘Web of Science’. And we conducted frequency analysis, topic modeling, centrality, and network analysis. As a result, the topics commonly emphasized during the study period were ‘social responsibility investment’, ‘corporate value’, ‘sustainable performance’, ‘financial performance’, ‘ESG management’, ‘ESG activities’, and ‘information disclosure’. In addition, the detailed topics and core word centrality for each research period were different. In addition, each study period’s detailed issues and keyword centrality are various. Overall, ESG-related research can be concluded that it has evolved beyond the initial stage to the growth stage.

세계 경제와 사회의 지속 가능한 발전은 환경, 사회 및 지배구조(Environment, Social, Governance, ESG) 활 동이 개별 기업의 비재무적 평가를 넘어 한 국가의 경쟁력을 가를 키워드로 화두가 되었다. 본 연구는 비정형 데이터 분석을 통해 주제별 ESG 연구 동향을 살펴보고 향후 학술연구와 ESG의 활동에 대한 방향을 제시하고 자 한다. 이를 위해 ‘Web of Science’에 게재된 국제학술지 논문 중 ESG에 관한 346편의 논문 초록을 수집하 여 빈도분석, 토픽 모델링, 중심성 및 네트워크분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과 연구 기간별 공통으로 강조된 주 제는 ‘사회적 책임투자’, ‘기업가치’, ‘지속 가능 성과’, ‘재무성과’, ‘ESG 경영’, ‘ESG 활동’과 ‘정보 공시’였다. 또한, 연구 기간별 세부 주제와 핵심 단어 중심성이 상이하게 나타났다. 전반적으로 ESG 관련 연구는 초기 단 계를 넘어 성장 단계로 진화했다는 결론을 얻을 수 있다.
