This research tried to examine the global trends and academic research trends on CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency), and suggested future research directions. As a result of analyzing the trends of CBDC in each country, the countries that introduced and are currently using it were emerging countries such as the Bahamas, 8 countries in the East Caribbean, Nigeria, and Jamaica. Those countries have been introduced CBDC for the purpose of reducing financial transaction costs, enhancing financial inclusiveness, and improving vulnerable financial infrastructure. The technical level of both wholesale CBDC and retail CBDC have begun to enter the trough of disillusionment in Gartner(2022)'s hype cycle. As a result of the trend of academic research, CBDC researches are conducted in various fields such as CBDC architecture, statistical analysis, policy/system, and positive/negative impacts. Finally, future research directions of CBDC were analyzed by dividing them into aspects of central banks, consumers, commercial banks, and technology development companies. In order for CBDC to be actually introduced and operated stably, it is expected that it will take a considerable amount of time because not only the maintenance of laws and systems, but also the formation of a national consensus is required. It is not yet known whether CBDC will become a global trend in the future, but many countries around the world are preparing to introduce CBDC, so if it should be introduced, it is necessary to fully consider the positive and negative aspects, and then create a good ecosystem for the new financial system to increase national competitiveness.

본 연구에서는 중앙은행에서 발행하는 디지털화폐인 CBDC(Central Bank Digital Currency)와 관련된 세계 각 국의 글로벌 동향과 학술연구 동향을 살펴보고자 하였으며, 이를 통해 향후의 연구 과제를 도출해 보았다. 세계 각 국의 CBDC 동향을 분석해 본 결과, 선도적으로 도입하여 현재 활용 중인 국가는 바하마, 동카리브해 8개국, 나이지리아, 자메이카 등 신흥국이었다. 이들 국가의 경우 금융 거래 비용 절감, 금융의 포용 성 확대, 취약한 금융 인프라의 개선 등을 위해 CBDC를 도입하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 기술수준은 거액결재용(wholesale)과 소액결재 용(retail) CBDC 모두가 Gartner(2022)의 하이퍼 사이클(hype cycle)에서 거품붕괴 단계(trough of disillusionment)에 진입하기 시작한 것으로 분석되었다. 학술연구 동향을 살펴보면, CBDC 아키텍처, 통계적 분석, 정책/제도, 긍정적/부정적 영향 등 다양한 분야로 연구가 진행되고 있음 을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 CBDC의 향후 연구과제는 중앙은행, 소비자, 시중은행, 기술개발자의 측면으로 구분해서 분석해 보았다. CBDC가 실제로 도입되어 안정적으로 운영되기 위해서는 법·제도의 정비 뿐만아니라 국민적 공감대가 형성되어야 하기 때문에 상당한 시 일이 소요될 것으로 예상된다. 따라서, 향후 CBDC가 글로벌 트랜드화 될지는 아직 알 수는 없지만, 전 세계의 많은 국가가 CBDC 도입을 준비 하고 있기에 도입을 해야 한다면, 긍정적 측면과 부정적 측면을 충분히 고려하여 새로운 금융시스템의 생태계를 잘 조성함으로써 국가 경쟁력 을 높이도록 해야 할 것이다.
