This study suggests that the success of strategic technology alliances require not only focal firm’s technological resources and capabilities but also mutual trust of participating firms. Based on this perspective, this study examines the effects of both the technological capabilities and interorganizational trust on innovation output, and furthermore, the moderating effects of the perceived risk in technology alliances on the relationship between the interorganizational trust and innovation output. The data were collected from the small and medium-sized firms that had experience of undertaking joint R&D projects using survey research method, and a sample of 111 firms was used for the empirical analysis. The results show that the focal firm’s technological capabilities have positive and significant impacts on the perceived innovation output measured by technological and commercial performance. Second, the mutual trust between the alliance partners have positive and strong impacts on not only the perceived innovation output but also the product innovation performance measured by the total number of product development and improvement. This result implies that interorganizational trust plays an important role in increasing the effectiveness of alliances through reducing the opportunistic behaviors of alliance partners and facilitating the information sharing and coordination between them. Third, the main and moderating effects of perceived risk in alliances are not significant at all, so it means that interorganizational trust matters regardless of the degree of perceived risk. The managerial implications of these finding, including the necessity of trustworthy management and trust-building techniques, are discussed and the future research directions are suggested.

본 연구는 전략적 기술제휴를 통해 기술혁신 성과를 창출하려면 기술역량뿐만 아니라 제휴 파트너 간의 신뢰가 중요한 역할을 한다는 관점 에 기초하여 기술역량과 파트너 간의 신뢰가 혁신성과에 미치는 효과, 그리고 이들 관계에서 잠재적 위험의 조절효과를 실증분석하고 있다. 공동 기술개발 과제를 수행한 경험이 있는 중소기업을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며 111개 기업으로부터 수집한 자료를 실증분석에 활용하였다. 연구결과, 기업의 기술역량은 지각된 혁신성과에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 우수 연구개발 인력과 시설, 핵심 기술 등 내부 기술역량을 보유하고 있을수록 혁신성과도 높아진다는 것을 의미한다. 둘째, 공동 기술개발에 참여하는 파트너 간의 신뢰는 지각 된 기술혁신 성과뿐만 아니라 객관적으로 측정한 제품혁신 성과에도 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 조직 간의 신뢰가 파 트너들의 기회주의적 행동을 줄여주고 정보 공유와 업무 협력을 촉진함으로써 제휴의 효과성을 높여준다는 것을 의미한다. 셋째, 잠재적 위험 이 혁신성과에 미치는 주효과와 조절효과는 모두 유의적이지 않음으로써 잠재적 위험의 정도에 무관하게 파트너 간의 신뢰가 전략적 기술제휴 에서 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 신뢰 경영의 필요성 등 이들 연구결과가 갖는 이론적 및 실무적 시사점에 대해 논의하였다.
