Protestant worship which inherited the legacies of European and North American Protestantism often regards seriousness and joy as hostile factors. Seriousness that lacks joy makes worship fall prey to closed seriousness, while joy that loses seriousness makes it fall prey to frivolous entertainment. The article aims to suggest a wholesome interrelationship between seriousness and joy in worship. In order to achieve this, the article, firstly, deals with the dichotomous problems between seriousness and joy in worship; secondly, explores the relationship between God’s glory (that is related to seriousness) and the worshippers’ joy. God’s glory and the worshippers’ joy are not contrary to each other, but they have an asymmetrical reciprocity in which the former has priority over the latter. Thus, worship should be simultaneously serious and joyful. Lastly, this article examines various scholarly works, such as, that of Johan Huizinga, Roger Caillois, Norbert Bolz, and Donald Winnicott, among others, who have brought play into the academic field, to illustrate how worship resonates with play. The main thesis of this article is that worship should be a type of play. In other words, worship should be a liturgical playground of playful worshippers who play for the sake of seriousness. When worship is ‘grave-merry’, it is not controlled by seriousness though it is serious, and it is not frivolous though it is playful.

유럽과 북미의 개신교의 유산을 물려받은 개신교 예배에서는 진지함 과 즐거움 사이의 대립이 종종 발견된다. 즐거움을 결여한 진지함은 예 배를 폐쇄된 엄숙함의 먹이로 전락시키는 반면에 진지함을 잃은 즐거 움은 예배를 경박한 오락의 먹이로 전락시킨다. 이 글의 목표는 예배 안에서의 진지함과 즐거움 사이의 바른 상호관계를 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 글은 먼저 예배 안에 존재하는 진지함과 즐거움 사이의 이항 대립적 문제들을 간략히 다룬다. 둘째로 이 글은 (진지함과 관계 하는) 하나님의 영광과 예배자의 즐거움 사이의 관계에 대하여 논한다. 하나님의 영광과 예배자의 즐거움은 대립하는 관계가 아니라 후자가 전자에 의존하는 비대칭적 상호성을 가진다. 그러므로 예배는 진지한 동시에 즐거워야 한다. 마지막으로 이 글은 놀이를 학문의 영역으로 끌 고 온 학자들(예를 들어, Johan Huizinga, Roger Caillois, Norbert Bolz, Donald Winnicott)의 연구를 바탕으로 놀이의 특징들을 살펴보 고 예배와 놀이가 공명한다는 사실을 밝힌다. 이 글은 예배는 일종의 놀이가 되어야 한다고 주장한다. 다시 말해서 이 글의 주요 논점은 예 배가 진지함을 위해 놀이하는 장난스러운 예배자들의 예전적 놀이터가 되어야 한다는 것이다. 예배가 장엄-쾌활(grave-merry) 할 때 예배는 진지함에도 불구하고 엄숙함에 통제당하지 않으며 장난스러움에도 불 구하고 경박하지 않을 수 있다.
