In this paper, we examine the economic effects of Konkuk University locating in Chungju on the local economy. To do this, we adopt the 2015 Regional Input-Output Table provided by the Bank of Korea. In addition, we consider both Types I and II Direct Requirements matrices, the latter of which adds the effects of inflow and outflow of money to the economy due to the supply of labor and all purchases by households. The input-output analysis gives us a total of production and value-added inducement effects of 346.3 billion won for Type I and 620.0 billion won for Type II, respectively, as of 2021. It would be an economic effect of reaching approximately 4.2 percent of the local economy in magnitude. During a recent local extinction crisis in Korea, it is crucial to construct a close partnership between local governments and universities considering our empirical findings on the effect of the local universities on the economy as well as culture and education in the local area.

본 연구는 건국대학교 글로컬캠퍼스가 충주지역 경제에 미치는 경제적 파급효과를 분 석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이러한 분석을 위해 본 연구는 『2015년 지역산업연관표』를 사 용하였으며, 일반적 형태의 투입계수행렬인 Type I을 비롯해 지역 내 가계의 노동공급과 소비지출을 추가로 고려한 Type II 투입계수행렬을 이용하여 경제적 파급효과를 산출하 였다. 분석 결과, 2021년 기준 건국대학교의 충주시 입지가 지역사회에 미치는 생산 및 부가 가치 유발효과는 Type I 적용 시 3,463억 원, Type II는 6,200억 원 수준에 이르는 것으로 추정되었다. 이는 건국대학교가 지역사회에 Type I 기준 시에 약 4.2%에 달하는 경제적 기여를 하고 있는 것으로 해석된다. 이렇듯 지역대학이 문화 및 교육뿐만 아니라 지역경 제의 발전에도 지대한 영향을 미치고 있다는 점에서 지방소멸 위기에 지역대학과 지방자 치단체 간의 긴밀한 협력체제 구축이 중요할 것이다.
