In this paper, we considered the cultural adaptation aspect of Lillias Horton Underwood (1851~1921) who was a stranger since she was an American who came to Joseon at the end of the 19th century. The subject of this article is Lillias Horton Underwood's Joseon experiences written in 『 Fifteen Years Among the Top-Knots, 1904』, which contains her 15 years of experiences in Seoul from March 1888. Her experiences are analyzed in this article through Milton J. Bennett's DMIS (Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity). The detailed items are ‘acceptance (of difference)’, ‘adaptation (to difference)’, and ‘integration (of difference)’. Acceptance of (difference)’ is the stage of understanding and accepting cultural differences. Lilias Horton experienced the filth and poverty of Joseon and people’s prejudice against foreigners. She overcame these through love for Joseon people and the hospitality of King Gojong and Consort Min. ‘Adaptation to (difference)’ is the stage in which a person acquires the ability of ‘intercultural empathy’, which is the ability to communicate effectively with people from other cultures by adapting to differences between cultures. In this stage we can observe the improvement of Korean communicative competence, acquisition of intercultural empathy ability, and aspects of cognitive frame conversion to overcome cultural differences. ‘Integration (of difference)’ is the stage of internalizing intercultural identity by acquiring the cultural identity of one’s own and other cultures. We can see the internalized cross-cultural identity when Lillias Horton Underwood remained as a friend of Koreans through the care for the people of Seoul, which was shown through the cholera relief, the devoted friendship for King Gojong in crisis, internalization of intercultural identity, positive view of Joseon culture, affirmation of American identity, and the very fact that she spent the end of her life in Seoul and remained a Seoulite. However, higher orientation, errors in historical facts, and orientalism can be observed as some limitations in her book.

본고에서는 릴리어스 호튼 언더우드(Lillias Horton Underwood, 1851~1921)가 19 세기 말 미국인으로서 조선에 온 이방인이라는 점에 주목하여 문화적응 양상을 고찰했 다. 릴리어스 호튼이 서울에 머물렀던 1888년 3월부터 15년 간의 기록을 담은 언더우 드 부인의 조선 견문록(Fifteen Years Among the Top-Knots, 1904)을 베넷(Milton J. Bennett)의 <상호문화 감수성 발달 모델(DMIS: Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity>의 ‘(차이의) 수용(acceptance)’, ‘(차이에의) 적응(adaptation)’, ‘(차이의) 통합(integration)’의 단계를 통해 분석했다. ‘(차이의) 수용’은 문화적 차이를 이해하고 수용하는 단계이다. 릴리어스 호튼은 조선 의 불결·가난, 외국인에 대한 편견을 겪었다. 이를 조선 사람에 대한 사랑, 고종과 민비 의 환대를 통해 극복한다. ‘(차이에의) 적응’은 문화 간 차이에 적응하여 타문화권 사람과 효과적으로 소통할 수 있는 능력인 ‘상호문화적 감정이입’ 능력을 갖게 되는 단계이다. 한국어 의사소통 능 력 신장, 상호문화적 감정이입 능력 획득, 문화차이 극복을 위한 인지적 프레임 전환 양 상을 살필 수 있다. ‘(차이의) 통합’은 자문화와 타문화의 문화적 정체성을 획득하여 상호문화적 정체성 을 내면화하는 단계이다. 콜레라 구제, 위기에 처한 고종에 대한 우정, 상호문화적 정 체성 내면화, 조선 문화에 대한 긍정적 시선, 미국인으로서의 정체성 긍정, 인생의 마지 막을 서울에서 보내고 서울 사람으로 남은 점 등을 통해 조선인과 삶을 나누는 친구로 남은 내면화된 상호문화적 정체성을 볼 수 있다. 상층 지향성, 역사적 사실에 대한 오류, 오리엔탈리즘은 한계로 볼 수 있다.
