This study reviews of papers published in the journal Regional Studies from 1997 to 2007 bibliometrically and longitudinally and presents a conceptual model to contribute to the sustainability of regional innovation. On the basis of the results of analyses, the main research is summarized in three areas: actors, environments, and performance. In particular, the results show that existing studies have often been confined to certain research topics, for example, the role of the ‘government’, the impact of ‘networking and interactive learning’, and the output of ‘regional development’. However, academically, disciplines with various perspectives such as economics, sociology, and engineering are needed for building the environments of surrounding actors to reinforce the creation of performances beyond input-output oriented regional innovation policies. Moreover, although the outputs of regional innovation are the ultimate results beyond the direct control of actors and environments, the performances should be considered as an essential component, along with the physical and environmental factors.

본 연구는 1997년부터 2007년 사이에 Regional Studies 저널에 등재된 논문들의 핵심용어들을 분석함으 로써 지역혁신의 지속성에 기여하는 요소들을 포함하는 개념모델을 제시한다. 핵심용어들을 분석한 결과, 주요 연구분야는 혁신주체, 혁신환경, 혁신성과의 세 가지 분야로 구분될 수 있다. 구체적으로 현존하는 연 구들은 주로 ‘정부’의 역할, ‘네트워크와 상호학습’의 영향력, ‘지역발전’ 성과에 제한되어 있어 지역혁신을 위한 성공요소들에 대한 연구의 불균형을 보이고 있다. 따라서 경제학, 사회학, 공학 등 다양한 관점을 통 해 투입-산출 지향적인 지역혁신정책을 넘어 다양한 혁신성과를 창출하기 위한 혁신주체와 혁신환경을 구 축할 필요가 있다. 즉, 이론적으로 지역혁신연구는 다학제적인 영역으로서 혁신주체, 혁신환경, 혁신성과간 균형을 찾아내는 연구활동을 통해 지속가능한 지역혁신을 지향하기 위한 기반을 제시해야 한다. 특히, 지 역혁신성과는 혁신주체와 혁신환경과는 달리 실질적인 조절이 쉽지 않으나, 이는 지속가능한 지역혁신 시 스템을 구축하기 위한 주요 요소로서 혁신주체 및 혁신환경 요소와 함께 상호작용하는 메커니즘 속에서 고 려되어져야 한다.
