As consumer needs for products and services become diverse and rapidly changing, companies are increasingly seeking external sources for the necessary technology and ideas, while also embracing open innovation strategies that generate product and service innovation through the sharing of internal and external resources. However, there is not much empirical research on patent-centered open innovation. This paper analyzes the impact of patent ownership and open innovation on a company's revenue growth by using data from the Korean National Survey of Business Activities from 2006 to 2018, reporting the scale of external R&D expenditure as a measure of open innovation activity. The results show that the participation rate of patent-holding companies in open innovation activities is higher than that of non-patent-holding companies. Furthermore, companies engaging in open innovation activities, particularly those with patents, have significantly larger revenue sizes than those that do not, and it was confirmed that an increase in the number of patents held leads to an increase in revenue regardless of company size. This indicates the need for policy support from the government to promote patent ownership and open innovation for corporate growth, particularly by developing separate support policies to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of open innovation activities for small and medium-sized enterprises.

제품･서비스에 대한 소비자의 니즈가 다양해지고 급변하면서 기업에 게 필요한 기술과 아이디어를 외부에서 조달하는 한편, 내‧외부 자원의 공유를 통해 제품 및 서비스의 혁신을 창출하는 전략인 개방형 혁신 (Open Innovation)이 각광을 받고 있지만, 특허권 중심의 개방형 혁신에 관한 실증분석 연구는 그리 많지 않다. 본 논문은 통계청의 2006년부터 2018년까지 13년간의 기업활동조사 데이터를 활용하여 외부 R&D 지출액 규모를 개방형 혁신활동 참여 정 도로 보고 특허권 보유와 개방형 혁신이 기업의 매출액 증가에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 특허권 보유기업의 개방형혁신 참여율이 특허를 보유하지 않은 기업보다 높게 나타났다. 또한, 개방형혁신 활동 을 하는 기업, 특히 특허를 보유한 기업의 매출액 규모가 그렇지 않은 기업보다 월등히 크며, 기업규모에 상관없이 보유 특허건수가 증가하 면 매출액이 증대되는 것으로 확인되었다. 이는 정부가 기업의 성장 촉진을 위해 특허권 보유와 개방형혁신을 정책적으로 지원하는 것이 필요하며, 특히 중소기업에 대해서는 개방형혁신 활동의 효율성 및 효 과성을 높이기 위한 별도의 지원정책을 마련하여 시행해야 함을 보여 준다.
