This study was conducted to find the ways to strengthen competitiveness in a situation where competition between exhibition and convention centers is intensifying and minimize the impact of the external environment at the same time by focusing social sustainability. This paper aims to explore the factors for the Exhibition and Convention Center to contribute to achieving social sustainability by maximizing the participation of citizens, the main stakeholders of the local community. This research conducted two steps of research method to collect the best practices and distinguish key drivers of citizen-friendly management. First, we conducted case study analysis from domestic and international Exhibition and Convention Centers, and second, semi-structured interviews were conducted with industry experts and citizens through the case of Suwon. As a result, this research derived five categories of citizen-friendly factors and their priorities and verified their contribution to sustainability. The result of this paper contributes to establishing the direction of the citizen-friendly strategy for the Exhibition and Convention Center management.

본 연구는 전시컨벤션센터 간 경쟁이 심화되고 있는 상황에서 경쟁력을 강화하고 동 시에 외부환경의 영향을 최소화할 수 있는 방법으로 사회적 지속가능성의 확보 방안을 모색하고자 진행되었다. 이를 위하여 전시컨벤션센터의 주요한 이해관계자 중 하나인 ‘시민’의 참여를 극대화하고 지역을 기반으로 전시컨벤션센터가 지속가능성에 영향 을 미칠 수 있는 방안으로 시민친화형 컨벤션센터의 운영요인을 규명하고자 하였다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여, 국내외 시민친화형 전시컨벤션센터 운영사례를 수집하 고 내용분석을 통해 주요 요인을 도출하였다. 또한, 시민의 수도 많고 시민사회가 성숙한 지역으로 판단되는 수원특례시를 사례지로 하여 전문가 및 시민 의견조사를 실시하였다. 국내외 사례분석을 통해 크게 5가지 분류로 시민친화형 전시컨벤션센터 운영요인을 도 출하였으며, 전문가 의견조사를 통해 이러한 시민친화형 전시컨벤션센터 운영요인들이 실 제로 지속가능한 MICE 실현에 기여할 수 있다는 점을 확인하였다. 또한, 시민 의견조사 결과, 시민들은 ‘지역사회 교육 및 일자리 창출’, ‘지역 편의시설, 인프라 제공’, ‘환경적 지속 가능성 증대 활동’, ‘지역사회커뮤니티 활성화’, ‘지역 문화 향유 기회 증대’의 순으 로 필요성을 인지하는 것으로 나타났다.
