This study examines James Scotts Gale’s The Cloud Dream of the Nine as diaspora literature. The Cloud Dream of the Nine is based on the Korean novel in classical Chinese Goounmong(九雲夢) by Kim Man-jung. As this work is translated into English, there is a phenomenon of being de-original, de-cultural, or maintaining or losing identity in order to settle in the English-American region. This phenomenon is because he understood and translated The Cloud Dream of the Nine from the perspective of a stranger James Gale, who stayed in Korea at the time. James Gale, who stayed in Korea at the end of the Joseon Dynasty as a reverse diaspora, accepted and translated literary works from his perspective, showing the uniqueness and hybridity of the original work of the inner world. Therefore, as Korean literature is translated into a foreign language by foreigners, confusion and hybridity of diaspora-like identity appear. In this study, the pattern that appeared while covering the Chinese poems inserted in the The Cloud Dream of the Nine from the perspective of strangers was examined.

본 연구는 이산문학으로서 제임스 스카츠 게일(James Scarth Gale)이 번역 한 The Cloud Dream of the Nine을 고찰하였다. The Cloud Dream of the Nine의 원작은 김만중의 한문소설인 『九雲夢』이다. 이 작품이 영어로 번역되면 서 영미권에 정착하기 위해 탈원작이 되거나, 탈문화, 또는 정체성을 유지하거 나 잃는 현상이 나타난다. 이러한 현상은 당시 조선에 머물던 이방인 제임스 게 일의 시각으로 『구운몽』을 이해하고 번역하였기 때문이다. 逆디아스포라로서 구한말 在朝外國人인 제임스 게일이 그의 시각으로 문학작품을 수용하고 번역 하면서 내면세계의 원작에 대한 고유성과 정체의 혼란 그리고 혼종성이 나타나게 된 것이다. 따라서 외국인에 의해 외국어로 한국문학이 번역되면서 디아스포 라적인 혼종성이 나타나게 된다. 본 연구에서는 이방인의 시각으로 본 『구운몽』 에 삽입된 한시를 영역하면서 나타난 양상을 고찰하였다.
