This article aims to analyze how the Kim Jong-un Era literature described the pandemics under the tradition of infectious disease prevention and treatment imaging in North Korean literature. If you examines North Korean literature historically, you can find disasters caused by infectious diseases and quarantine efforts to overcome them. In North Korean literature, what is noteworthy in relation to infectious diseases is the literary work depicting germ warfare. The short story Clean Land (2021) depicts the germ warfare during the Korean War and “combative treatment of infectious diseases.” The pandemics and quarantine depicted in literary works at a time when the socialist system was built and the Juche ideology became the only system in North Korea were ways of promoting the excellence of the socialist health and hygiene system and the “Juche medical system.” In this tradition, the Kim Jong-un Era literature promoted the fact that North Korean society is safe from the pandemics such as SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. For example, in the short story Love is Hot (2016), North Korea boasted of the excellence of its socialist health and hygiene in the Juche medical system to the extent that it overcame the pandemics such as the AIDS, SARS, and MERS. However, the way North Korean literature reflects the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 was quite different from before. In particular, the literary work depicting the “highest level of COVID-19 prevention and treatment,” which was developed in a combative manner for the entire nation from May to August in 2022, is noteworthy. For example, in the long lyric poem On a Silent Street (2022.6), the border closure, city blockade, and movement prohibition to prevent the spread of COVID-19 were expressed as "chaos and silence.“ In the lyric poem Spring Song in October (2022.10), the ”high level of COVID-19 prevention and treatment“ was compared to ”war“ and the poem praised the success of the prevention and treatment in just 90 days as a symbol of the leader’s dedication and sincerity of the medical staff. However, most of the literary works that reflect the prevention and treatment of self-reliance against pandemics such as SARS, MERS, and COVID-19 are based on conventional propaganda that reaffirms the greatness of Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and the superiority of North Korea’s Juche ideological system. It is very disappointing that it was only political propaganda without a literary touch.

이 글에서는 북한문학의 방역 재현 전통 속에서 김정은 시대(2012~22) 문학 의 사스, 메르스, 코로나19 등 팬데믹 재현 양상을 간략히 분석한다. 북한문학 을 역사적으로 살펴보면 전염병으로 인한 재난과 그를 극복하려는 방역 재현의 형상을 적잖이 찾아볼 수 있다. 팬데믹 관련 북한문학의 방역 재현방식 중 주목 할 것은 우선 세균전을 그린 전쟁문학이다. 단편소설 ｢깨끗한 땅｣(2021)을 보면 6.25전쟁기의 세균전이 소환되어 당시의 ‘전투적 방역’ 성공을 형상화하였다. 1950~60년대 사회주의체제 건설기와 1970~80년대 주체사상체제 시기의 자연 재해와 전염병 같은 재난에 대처하는 방역 재현은 사회주의적 보건 위생과 ‘주 체의학체계’의 우수성을 선전하는 방식이었다. 이러한 방역 재현의 전통 하에 김정은 시대 10년간의 문학 역시 사스, 메르스, 코로나19 같은 세계적 유행병에 서 상대적으로 안전함을 선전하였다. 가령 단편소설 ｢사랑은 뜨겁다｣(2016)에 서는 에이즈, 사스, 메르스 등 팬데믹의 철통 방역과 사회주의 보건 위생 및 주 체의학의 우수함을 자랑하였다. 그러나 코로나19 방역의 문학적 재현은 차원이 달라졌다. 특히 2022년 5월부터 8월까지 전 인민적으로 전개된 코로나19 ‘최대 비상방역체계’의 문학적 재현은 특기할 만하다. 가령 장시 ｢고요한 거리에서｣ (2022.6)에서 코로나19로 인한 국경 폐쇄, 도시 봉쇄, 이동 금지로 인한 일상 파 괴를 ‘대동란, 고요’로 형상화하였다. 서정시 ｢10월에 부르는 봄노래」(2022.10) 에서는, 코로나 극복과정을 ‘최대비상방역체계’를 통한 ‘방역대전’으로 형상하 고 지도자와 의료진의 헌신, 희생, 정성으로 불과 90일 만에 방역에 성공했음을 찬양하였다. 그러나 사스, 메르스, 코로나19 같은 팬데믹에 맞서 자력갱생 방역 을 강조한 김정은 시대 문학 대부분이 지도자의 위대함과 체제 우월성을 재삼 확인했다는 상투적 선전에 그친 점은 매우 아쉽다.
