This paper pays attention to the relationship between Korean-American teenagers and tigers in the young adult novel When You Trap a Tiger, by Korean-American writer Tae Keller to examine the Korean-American teenager character’s self-identity issues. The author shows that Asian-American teenagers can be alienated from mainstream society through the setting where the main character, Lily, has the superpower to turn into an invisible person. The author warns that Korean adolescents’ early mental maturity can be false growth caused by the circumstances of immigrant families. This false growth makes it difficult to survive Korean-Ameican adolescents in American society in the long run, thus they need to learn active self-expression rather than consideration and obedience to their families. Also, the strong familialism of immigrant families can hinder their independence from their parents. In this respect, the writer advises that Asian-American adolescents should face up to the fact that American society is not friendly to Asian immigrants and should be able to criticize unfair treatment with appropriate aggression. The writer also positively deals with the active transformations of the pre-modern Korean story, “The brother and sister who became the sun and the moon,” depending on immigrant generations. For the grandmother's generation, Korea or Koreanness is a heavy burden that must be avoided and rejected. Korea’s past has many tragic historical events. However, Korea can be reborn as a magical space and Koreaness can be valuable asset when later generations focus on the bright side of Korea such as people’s stong will to live.

본고는 한국계 미국 작가 태 켈러의 장편소설 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』에 나타난 한국계 미국 청소년과 호랑이의 관계에 주목하여 한국계 미국 청소년의 현재에 대한 작가의 진단과 자아정체성 형성을 위한 제안을 살 펴본다. 작가는 주인공 릴리의 투명인간 초능력 설정을 통해 아시아계 청 소년들이 미국 주류 사회에서 소외당하고 위축된 현상을 드러냈다. 작가 는 한국계 청소년의 정신적 성숙이 이민자 가정의 상황에서 기인한 가짜 성장일 수 있다고 경고한다. 이러한 가짜 성장은 장기적으로 미국 사회에 서 살아남는 데 어려움을 주기 때문에, 청소년은 가족에 대한 배려와 순 종보다는 적극적인 자기표현을 우선시해야 한다고 제안한다. 그리고 이민 자 가정의 강한 가족 중심주의는 청소년이 부모를 떠나 성인이 되는 진정한 독립을 저해할 수 있는 부정적 요소로 제시되었다. 이러한 현상과 과 제를 바탕으로 작가는 한국계 청소년에게 적극적인 자기 방어력을 갖추 어 불공정한 대접을 받는 경우 즉시 대응할 수 있어야 한다고 조언한다. 또한 이민 세대에 따라 ｢해와 달이 된 오누이｣ 설화가 바뀌는 모습을 통 해 한국문화의 적극적인 취사선택과 변형을 긍정적으로 제시한다. 한국문 화의 원형을 고수하는 데 얽매이지 말고 자기가 필요한 것을 선택하고 과 감히 변형하면 한국은 가난과 고통이 아닌 마법의 공간으로 재탄생할 것 이고 자아정체성의 한 요소로 기꺼이 받아들여질 수 있는 것이다.
