Recently, the consumption of medicinal herbs has been increased as food and herbal medicine and they have taken much attention for their specific pharmacological properties. In the present study, we tried to confirm what are used for unrestricted, restricted, and unavailable items among 165 medicinal herbs which can be used as food ingredients listed in the Korean Pharmacopoeia (Ⅻ) and whether the classification of each medicinal herb is reasonable in terms of safety issues. In results, Zanthoxyli Pericarpium and Bupleuri Folium that are used for food without restriction and Xanthium strumarium L., Epimedium koreanum Nakai, and Ginkgo biloba L. that are limitedly used in food were identified as herbs having safety issues because of their well-known several toxicities. Therefore, they should be discussed or studied more carefully as food ingredients in 「Food Standards and Specifications」of the Food Sanitation Act. By ensuring the safety of food and Korean traditional medicine and preventing health problems caused by the misuse and abuse of herbal medicines as food ingredients, this study would contribute to the improvements of public health.

최근 건강에 대한 관심이 높아짐에 따라 특정 약리효과를 갖는 한약재를 식품으로 섭취하는 경우가 증가하면 서, 식의약 공용 한약재의 안전성에 대한 관심이 고조되고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 대한민국약전에 수재된 165개의 한 약재 중 식품 원료로 사용됨에 있어 제한이 없는 경우와 그 사용에 제한이 있는 경우 및 사용할 수 없는 경우의 품 목이 무엇인지 확인하고 각 원료별 구분이 타당한지의 여부에 대해 각종 자료를 통해 확인하고자 하였다. 식품 원료 로서 사용에 제한이 없는 원료 중 산초와 시호, 제한적으로 사용 가능한 원료 중 창이자(도꼬마리), 음양곽, 은행엽, 하수오 등은 식품위생법의「식품의 기준 및 규격」에서 그 안전성에 대해 재검토되어야 할 품목임을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 식품과 한약의 안전성을 보장하고 식품 원료로서 한약(생약)의 오남용으로 인한 보건위생상의 문제를 미연에 방지하여 국민 보건 향상에 이바지할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
