This study examines text-interpretation strategies developed by Leo Strauss and Quentin Skinner from a comparative perspective—two of the most influential methodologies in the study of political thought. The two theorists, respectively, offered unique perspectives called “textualism” and “contextualism,” which remain highly influential among the contemporary scholars of the history of political thought. Building upon the existing discussion about the two theorists, this study explores how the two disparate approaches resulted in divergent interpretations of Machiavelli’s theory of the citizen army and what implications it involves. Further, this study points out limitations of the two approaches in their insufficient attention to the importance of military matters to Machiavelli’s political philosophy due to the two theorists’ obsession with their own theoretical projects. I conclude the paper by calling attention to an alternative (and eclectic) tradition considering the following two major levels of political philosophy in a simultaneous and complementary manner: a vital problem of his/her day, on the one hand, and the continuing dialogue of (Western) political philosophy, on the other.

이 논문은 정치사상사 연구방법론의 다원적 관점들과 텍스트 독해방법을 비교의 관점에서 살펴본다. 일차적으로 이 논문은 방법론 논쟁과 관련하여 가장 중심적인 위치에 있는 두 이론가인 레오 스트라우스와 퀜틴 스키너의 접근법을 비교한다. 정치사상 텍스트 독해방법과 관련하여 두 이론가는 각각 ‘텍스트의 정밀 독해’(혹은 ‘문헌주의’; textualism)방법과 ‘맥락주의’(contextualism)라는 고유한 관점을 제시하였고, 이는 오늘날 정치사상 연구자들이 정치사상사를 분석하고 해석하는데 있어서 빈번하게 참고하는 접근방법으로 자리잡고 있다. 스트라우스와 스키너에 대한 기존의 논의들을 기반으로 하여, 이 논문에서는 이들의 상이한 관점이 실제 같은 텍스트 분석에서 어떠한 차이를 생산해내었으며 또한 그렇게 생산된 차이들이 정치사상적으로 어떠한 함의를 지니는지를 두 연구자의 마키아벨리 분석사례를 비교함으로써 살펴보고자 한다. 나아가, 이 논문은 ‘고전정치철학의 부활’과 ‘근대 공화주의 전통의 재조명’이라는 각각의 근본적 목표와 결부된 스트라우스와 스키너의 방법론이 마키아벨리의 시민군 논의 해석에 있어서 불충분한 설명을 제시하고 있음을 지적하고, 이에 대한 대안으로서 쉘던 월린 등이 제시하는 다층적 관점을 통해 정치철학의 ‘전통과의 지속적 대화’와 ‘당면한 현실문제에 대한 대응’이라는 두 차원이 상보적이고 유연한 형태로 이해될 필요가 있음을 주장한다.
