This study is to analyze the movement for gender diversity in social media. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between fashion and gender, and to examine gender fluidity that is increasing in the recent fashion industry. For this purpose, text-mining analysis was conducted on the Instagram account of Alok Vaid-Menon who is engaged in various activities for gender awareness as a transgender woman. The research findings are as follows: First, Alok Vaid-Menon’s the movement to increase gender awareness through Instagram was developed along with hashtags such as #degenderfashion and #beyondthegenderbinary that signify gender diversity. Second, Alok Vaid-Menon made efforts to change gender stereotypes by sharing images of cross-dressing such as dresses, skirts, colorful prints and colors, makeup, and accessories, while breaking away from the dichotomous concept of gender. Third, as a transgender woman, Alok Vaid-Menon promoted #nothingwronghair as part of her feminist movement, informed that hair removal was cultural racism, and encouraged her followers to participate. In addition, she engaged not only in changing gender awareness, but also in movements for women's rights and anti-racial discrimination. Fourth, Alok Vaid-Menon’s social media activities were supported by many followers and built a huge fan-ship, which served as a social capital for her. Accordingly Alok Vaid-Menon’s activities have expanded into mainstream media and fashion industry as well. This research is significant in understanding the development and flow of Alok Vaid-Menon’s activities for gender diversity, ultimately in predicting its influence and direction.

본 연구의 목적은 젠더에 대한 이론적 고찰을 바탕으로 소셜미디어에 나타나는 젠더 다양성을 위한 움직 임을 연구하는 것이다. 연구방법은 문헌연구와 빅데이터 연구방법인 텍스트마이닝과 인스타그램 아카이브 분석을 병행했다. 본 연구에서는 트랜스젠더 여성으로서 젠더 인식변화를 위해 다양한 활동을 펼치고 있는 알록 베이드-메논의 인스타그램 계정을 분석하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인스타그램을 통한 젠더 인식변화의 움직임은 젠더 다양성을 의미하는 ‘degenderfashion’, ‘beyondthegenderbinary’ 등의 해시태그와 함 께 전개되었다. 둘째, 알록 베이드-메논은 이분화된 성 관념에서 벗어나 원피스 드레스, 스커트, 화려한 프린트 와 다채로운 컬러 등의 여성 복식과 진한 메이크업, 화려한 장신구 착용 등의 외양을 통해 크로스 드레싱 이미 지를 공유하며 젠더 인식변화를 위해 노력하였다. 셋째, 트랜스젠더 여성으로서 알록 베이드-메논은 페미니즘 운동의 일환인 #nothingwronghair을 전개하며, 제모가 문화 인종주의임을 알리고, 팔로워들에게 #nothingwronghair 활동을 독려하였다. 더불어 젠더 인식변화뿐만 아니라 여성 인권과 인종차별 개선을 위한 움직임에도 활동을 펼쳤다. 넷째, 인스타그램에서 알록 베이드-메논의 활동은 많은 팔로워에게 지지를 받아 팬쉽을 구축하였으 며, 사회적 자본으로 역할을 하였다. 알록 베이드-메논의 활동은 인스타그램에서 확장되어 주류 매체 및 주류 패션에도 등장하였다. 인스타그램을 통해 2015년부터 시작된 알록 베이드-메논의 젠더 다양성을 위한 움직임 의 전개 양상과 흐름을 분석한 본 연구는 최근 더욱 세분화되어 표현되는 젠더리스 및 젠더 플루이드 경향을 이해하고 예측하는 데 도움이 될 것이라 사료된다.
