As crisis awareness regarding environmental pollution and resource depletion is magnified, environmental problems due to various industrial wastes and wastes easily thrown away in our daily lives are being caused. These environmental problems became the essential practice subject to be resolved by the society. As awareness regarding the environment increases, wastes are recognized as resources that are in the process of circulation rather than an object of simple disposal and researches on recycling are carried out actively in various fields. Not only are the fashion industry manufacturing diverse harmful environmental substances by industrial steps due to the nature of trend but also wastes thrown away before use account for significant quantity. This research focused on the design methods and expressive techniques for the development of fashion design that increase the effective utilization of resources by studying up-cycling which is socially and environmentally on the rise. First of all, to exactly identify what an upcycle is, the concepts, types and features of upcycle, and cases of up-cycling fashion design were examined as the background of the advent of up-cycling. As an upcycle method of clothing structure, it was focused on disassembly and recombination. For the expressive technique of design, the study borrowed ‘Canvas Stitching’ and investigated definition of the technique, stitch types and features, cases of designs utilizing canvas stitching and the intention was to express artistic aesthetic applying the technique. This research emphasized the importance of methodological classification into formative and aesthetic elements regarding how to maximize utilization of upcycle, limiting to stocked clothing and discarded textiles. Therefore, it is deemed that the implication of original designs and new techniques can promote practical circular value system which is emerging recently. The significance of this research lies in the implication that experimental research from various perspectives regarding the expressive technique of design can be a useful strategy in terms of upcycle fashion design.

환경오염과 자원 고갈에 대한 위기의식이 부각되면서 각종 산업 폐기물과 일상생활에서 쉽게 버려지는 쓰레기들로 인한 환경오염 문제를 야기되고 있다. 이러한 환경문제는 이 사회가 해결해야 할 필수적인 실천 과제가 되었다. 환경에 대한 경각심이 커지면서 폐기물을 단순한 폐기의 대상이 아닌 순환과정에 있는 자원 으로 인식하고, 다양한 분야에서 재활용에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 패션산업은 유행이라는 특 성상 산업 단계별로 매우 다양한 환경 폐해 물질들을 생산해내고 있음은 물론이고, 사용하기 전에 버려지는 폐기물들도 상당히 많은 양을 차지하고 있다. 본 연구는 사회적, 환경적으로 대두되고 있는 업사이클에 대해 연구함으로써 자원의 효율적 활용도를 높이는 패션디자인 개발을 위한 디자인 방법과 표현 기법의 연구에 중점을 두었다. 먼저 업사이클이 무엇인지 그 정확한 내용을 파악하기 위해 업사이클이 탄생하게 된 배경으 로 업사이클의 개념, 유형과 특징, 업사이클링 패션디자인 사례를 파악하였다. 의복 구조의 업사이클 방법으 로 해체와 재조합을 중점적으로 다루었다. 디자인 표현 기법으로는 ‘캔버스 스티칭’을 차용하여 기법의 정의, 스티치 종류와 특징, 캔버스 스티칭을 활용한 디자인 사례들을 살펴보고, 기법을 적용한 예술적인 심미성을 표현하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 업사이클을 위한 아이템을 재고 의류와 폐원단으로 한정하여 업사이클 활용을 어떻게 극대화할 수 있는지에 대한 그 방법적인 조형적 요소와 미적 요소로 나누어 그 중요성을 강조하였다. 따라서, 독창적인 디자인과 새로운 기법의 시사점은 최근 대두되고 있는 실천적 순환 가치 체계를 장려할 수 있을 것으로 본다. 본 연구의 의의는 업사이클 패션디자인에 있어 디자인 표현 기법에 대한 다각도의 실험 적인 연구가 연구자와 패션디자이너에게 유용한 전략이 될 수 있음을 시사하였다.
