This study evaluated the process of suspension of studies by out-of-school youth and the process of adapting to the community after the suspension. An interview was conducted with 7 out-of-school youths in the form of a qualitative case study. The method of analysis was first based on the description of the participants’ personal context and history, and derived 4 categories and 14 sub-topics in search of common topics that go beyond each case. The results showed that after the suspension of the studies, the participants were experiencing various difficulties outside the school, but finding their own career paths and adapting within the community through various social resources and support. This emphasizes the need for customized case management for out-of-school youth in various situations and the role of out-of-school support centers. In addition, the findings highlighted the need for expanding social resources. Consequently, social support for out-of-school youths, and the cooperation of each institution and organization related to out-of-school youth was proposed.

본 연구는 학교 밖 청소년의 학업 중단 과정과 중단 이후 지역사회에 적응하는 과정에 대해 파악하고자 질적 사례연구방법의 방식으로 7명의 학교 밖 청소년을 대상으로 심층 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 분석 방법은 먼저 참여자의 개인별 맥락과 역사를 기술하였으며, 각 사례를 초월하는 공통 주제를 찾아 4개의 범주와 14개의 하위 주제를 도출하였다. 그 결과, 연구참여자들은 학업 중단 이후 학교 밖에서 여러 어려움을 경험하지만, 다양한 사회적 자원과 지 지를 통해 자신만의 진로를 찾고 지역사회 내 적응을 이루어나간다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이를 통해 다양한 상황의 학교 밖 청소년을 위해 맞춤형 사례관리의 필요성과 학교 밖 청소년지원센터의 역할을 강조하였다. 또한 학교 밖 청소년을 위한 사회적 자원과 사회적 지지의 확대가 필요하며, 학교 밖 청소년과 관련된 각 기관과 단체의 협력을 제언하였다.
