The study tried to find a link between the past moral training textbooks and modern civic education. To this end, the study subdivided ‘citizenship', a typical content element of civic education, into civil rights, political rights, and social rights proposed by Marshall and analyzed how these citizenship-related concepts are reflected in the 1906 Ethics Textbook edited by Shin Hae-young. The study found that the Ethics Textbook described the topics of civil rights, political rights, and social rights in some detail, but it did not overcome the limitations of the Confucian society at the time. Nevertheless, the study concluded that his textbook is contextually connected to modern civic education based on the following three grounds: firstly, his book emphasized both traditional Confucian ethics and Western ethics equally; secondly, it strongly insisted that the nation should restore its independence by educating its own people on the basis of strong nationalism; thirdly, the book dealt with many concepts related to modern citizenship.

본 논문에서는 과거 수신교과서와 현대 시민교육과의 연결 고리를 찾아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 시민 교육의 대표적인 내용 요소라고 할 수 있는 ‘시민권’을 Marshall이 제시한 공민적 권리, 정치적 권리, 사회적 권리로 나누고, 신해영이 1906년 편술한 수신교과서 ‘윤리학교과서’에 시민권 관련 내용이 어떻게 반영되어 있는지 분석하였다. 분석 결과 ‘윤리학교과서’에는 공민적 권리, 정치적 권리, 사회적 권리에 대한 내용이 비 교적 자세하게 진술되어 있었으나 당시 유교 사회의 시대적인 한계를 넘어서지 못함도 확인할 수 있었다. 그 러나 교과서 저자 신해영은 전통적인 유교 윤리와 서구적인 윤리를 동시에 강조하고 있으며, 민족주의적인 색채를 가지고 근대적인 교육을 실천하였으며, 국권 회복을 강하게 주장하였고, 교과서 내용 중 근대적인 시 민권과 관련된 내용이 다수 포함되어 있다는 점 등을 통해 ‘윤리학교과서’는 현대 시민교육과 일정한 맥락적 관계성을 가지고 있음을 확인하였다.
