Vegan leather, also called “sustainable” or “alternative” leather in the literature, has been attracting greater attention. This type of leather is usually produced from nonanimal or plant-based vegetable materials ranging from cactus, mushrooms to paper. However, the question of whether such vegan leather brings environmental benefits is yet to be answered. In this paper, we will address this issue of whether vegan leather is truly eco-friendly. This paper aims to conduct a product life cycle assessment of the synthetic leather of Haunji, of which the main material is Korean paper. Accordingly, Hanwon Co., Ltd., which developed Haunji Leather, requested data and interviews. Through the interview, it could be expected that it would be more eco-friendly than cowhide because it uses less water and energy and does not use oily chemical materials. To verify eco-friendliness and avoid green washing, a process evaluation analysis that evaluates how much input and output in the process affect the environment is essential. Therefore, this study is meaningful in raising awareness of eco-friendliness verification to consumers and the industry, and it is thought to be meaningful as an early study that presents an eco-friendliness verification framework.

‘비건 가죽’, ‘지속가능한 가죽’이라고 불리우는 가죽이 큰 관심을 끌고 있다. 이런 종류의 가 죽은 동물성 가죽이 아닌 선인장, 버섯, 종이 등의 식물성 재료로 만들어진다. 하지만, 이러한 비건 가죽이 더 친환경적인지에 대해서는 아직 검증되지 않았다. 이에 본 연구에서는 비건 가 죽이 정말로 친환경적인지에 대해 알아보는 것을 본 연구의 목적으로 설정하였다. 그 중 한지 가 주원료인 하운지 가죽을 대상으로 전과정평가를 실시하고자 했고, 전과정평가를 위해 하운 지 가죽을 개발한 담당자와 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 인터뷰를 통해 물과 에너지를 적게 사용하 고 유성 화학 재료를 사용하지 않기 때문에 소가죽보다는 친환경적일 것이라고 예상할 수 있었 다. 또한, 친환경성을 검증하고 그린워싱(green washing)을 피하기 위해서는 공정과정에서의 투입 및 산출물에 대한 정보가 중요함을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 본 연구는 소비자 및 업계에 친환경성 검증에 대한 인식을 제고하는데 의의를 가지며, 가죽 분야의 친환경성 검증 프레임워 크 및 방법론을 제시하는 초기 연구로 의미가 있다.
