Disease, while causing human pain and suffering, can also affect life circumstances in such a way that it becomes a special subject of literary creation. In Chinese literature, a school of thought that emphasizes the relevance of life’s hardships to poetic creation exists. Particularly, disease often prompts poets to re-examine themselves and the outside world, leading them to seek relief and solace through poetic creation. The late Joseon Dynasty poet, Jeong Yak-yong, is one such man concerned with the creation of disease-related poems. A multi-disciplined poet, Silhak(실학) scholar, and medical expert, Jeong Yak-yong had been plagued by diseases throughout his life, which provided him with a unique motivation to create disease-related poems. Therefore, this paper employs medical anthropology theory to analyze the writings of disease and healing in Jeong Yak-yong's disease-related poems. The writing of disease in Jeong Yak-yong's poems covers two aspects: the illness experienced and the emotional connotation. For the former, he illustrates the experiences of living with disease through general description, while recording various symptoms through specific description. With regard to the latter, he depicts the sorrow caused by disease, the positive mindset while confronting a disease, and empathy towards the suffering of others. While writing on healing, Jeong Yak-yong covers two aspects: the medical treatment and the extended paths of healing. He records his experiences and specific details of medical treatment, reflecting his expertise in the medical field. He also tries to relieve his pain through literary therapy, interpersonal therapy, and natural therapy, reflecting his positive attitude towards life.

질병은 인류 생활에서 건강과 상대되는 생명 현상으로 인류에게 고통을 주는 동 시에, 생명 체험에도 영향을 미치기 때문에 문학 창작의 특별한 소재로 인식되어 왔다. 한문학에서는 오랜 세월 동안 인생의 고난과 한시 창작 간의 관련성을 강조 하는 관점을 유지해 왔고, 시인들은 자신과 외부를 재조명하고 질병을 소재로 한 한시 창작을 통해 삶의 위로를 찾곤 했다. 조선 후기의 정약용이 질병시 창작에 관심을 기울인 대표적 시인 중 한 명이었다. 주지하는 바와 같이, 정약용은 시인이 면서도, 실학자이자 의학자였다. 이러한 다중 신분을 겸비하고 있었던 정약용은 일생 동안 병이 잦았는데, 이 점은 정약용이 질병시를 창작하게 된 독특한 계기가 되었다. 이에 따라 본고에서는 의학인류학 이론을 활용하여 정약용 질병시 중의 질병과 치료 묘사를 조명하였다. 정약용 질병시 중의 질병 묘사에는 병고의 체험에 대한 묘사와 질병을 대하는 내면의 정감 표현이 드러나 있다. 병고의 체험에 대한 묘사 측면에서 볼 때 정약용 은 전체적인 묘사를 통해 질병 중의 생명 상태를 표현하기도 하고, 구체적인 묘사 를 통해 다양한 병증을 기록하기도 하였다. 내면의 정감 표현 측면에서 볼 때 정약 용은 병중의 근심을 토로하는 슬픈 정감과 질병에 태연하게 직면하는 활달한 정 감, 그리고 타인의 고통을 애련하게 여기는 배려의 정감을 표현해내고 있다. 또한 정약용 질병시 중의 치료 묘사에는 의약 치료와 다중 경로를 통한 치료 과정이 드 러나 있다. 의약 치료 측면에서 볼 때 의학자로서의 정약용은 다양한 의약 치료 체험과 구체적인 세부 사항을 기록함으로써 의약 치료에 대한 관심을 보이고 있다. 다중 경로를 통한 치료 과정의 측면에서 볼 때 정약용은 문학 치료와 대인 관 계 치료, 그리고 자연 치료를 통해 질병을 해소하는 등 적극적인 인생 태도를 드러내고 있다.
